I am using an air compressor to power a rotary tool which i am using to port and gasket match the intake manifolds on my explorer. Anyway, this particular compressor that I have access to constantly runs while using the rotary tool. Is it bad for the compressor to run all the time, or is it like a normal engine that is designed to and has no problem running for continous periods of time? I'm a newbie to the air compressor scene.. sorry if this is a dumb question!! thx

it may not be bad for the compressor, but it means that it isn't "big" enough to power the tool you are using most likely.

Most times if the compressor is big enough it'll create the air inside the tank, and turn itself off. And it wont turn back on unless the tool needs more air.

I don't think you can break your compressor, but a bigger tank wouldn't hurt.

Your tool will be rated by how much cfm & psi it needs (ie 5cfm @ 90spi); and the compressor will have a max output rating of cfm at certain psi. If the compressor can't keep up, it will constantly run.

The compressor's rating exceed the tool's ratings slightly. I know a bigger compressor would be ideal, but unfortuntately, this is the only one i have access to. I'm trying to decide whether I can finish the project with the compressor, or if i have to return to using that blasted dremel tool. hehe
