I have this Mobo

BCM VP1541 Motherboard

The chipset is ALI M1541/1543C AGP/PCI/ISA Chipset (Aladdin V)

The AGP says it supports AGP 1x/2x and it is AGP 1.0 Specification

Now here is the question

Can I use AGP 2.0 cards with this? For example, can I use a Geforce 2 MX card or a Geforce 256 AGP card with this motherboard? It says they are 2x/4x and AGP 2.0 Specification. I heard the difference between AGP 1.0 and AGP 2.0 was that AGP 2.0 supplied more voltage to the video card. Does anyone have an answer to this?

As far as the GF2 MX goes, it should work in a AGP v1.0 slot. Its power requirements are quite low anyway so it shouldn't run into any trouble unless the motherboard is either badly made or incompatible in some way (I know the Alladin 5 based motherboards had some major problems with TNT/2 cards), but I think you will be ok.

AGP v2 has some small modifications. Apart from supporting higher speeds, it does also allow for different slot designs to give more power to cards.

alright, i got some info on agp 1.0 and 2.0 specifications

AGP 1.0

Modes
  • 1x (266Mbps) (8 bytes per two clock cycles)
  • 2x (533Mbps) (8 bytes per clock cycle)
Connectors
  • AGP 3.3v keyed

AGP 2.0

Modes
  • 1x (266Mbps) (8 bytes per two clock cycles)
  • 2x (533Mbps) (8 bytes per clock cycle)
  • 4x (1.07Gbps) (16 bytes per clock cycle)
Connectors
  • AGP 3.3v keyed
  • AGP 1.5v keyed
  • AGP UNIVERSAL (supports both 3.3v and 1.5v cards)

So if the video card that is AGP 2.0 is a 3.3v card then it should work in AGP 1.0 slots as well then, am i correct? If it is the 1.5v card then it will not work in AGP 1.0 slots because it will supply too much voltage. Please if anyone knows, please help me out.

Partly correct, the 'keyed' slot will not actually allow the card to insert properly so as to prevent damage.

All motherboards that accept only 1.5v signalling should have a keyed slot. I do not believe the Geforce2 MX has any specific problem and should work with both types of AGP slot (I have a Asus Geforce2 MX and Leadtek Geforce DDR card at hand and both are universal - cut-outs in the card connector keyed to work in either slot).

ok so if it is universal type of card and 3.3v then it should work then right?
