Is it really that big of a difference? I have a 80gb 4200 rpm hd right now and am thinking of chucking it on Ebay so I can get a 60gb 7200 and feel the power!!

TIA.

Muff,
From what I hear it makes alot of Diff. I won't buy a 5400 for my desktop so i will def get the 7200 for my lappy when i get it. Now the better question is if you need the extra 20gb ur gunna lose if u do the switch. There have been lots of posts on people doing benchmarks before and after the upgrade makes alot of diff. Esp if you don't have the 5400 to begin with ur gettin almost 2times the speed.

Yeah do it!!! Sell me your 80GB :D

Faster means more heat and less battery life, make sure you're willing to deal with the tradeoffs. I'll stick with 4200 in my X31, I like not having to recharge every 2 hours.

that is just crazy.... the 7200rpm hard drive might decrease your battery life by 5-12 min.... heat is hardly increased... performance is awesome and very much worth your upgrade... battery life shouldnt be an issue if you did your research when you bought your laptop

I've done the upgrade on both my IBM laptops, and the difference is simply stunning. Both came with 4200 RPM drives and felt very sluggish. They feel MUCH MUCH snappier with the 7200 RPM drives.

Battery life is not decreased by any noticable amount. In fact, for me, it has increased... The time I spent waiting for the slow drives to load something is now spent working. So the trade off is beneficial for overall battery life. Heat is not an issue, but there is a slight bit more vibration... but just barely noticable.

This is one upgrade I recommend most for laptops. It makes the most difference.

If you have the Hitachi 80GN 80GB
you will not be able to tell that much of a difference I did it and then went back to the 80GN
and can't tell any loss in speed but gained back about 45min. to and hour of batt. life.

Hey! i have a Toshiba 5205-s703 and i was wondering if it would be advisable to get the Hitachi 7200 rpm HDD??? coz my laptop does tend to get hot ( average cpu temps are around 60 Degree Celcius and average 4200 rpm HDD temps are 53-60 degree celcius ) so would faster hdd overheat coz of the hot cpu???? would u guys suggest i get the 7200 rpm coz i really want the performance boost ....

thanks

P.S: my laptop has a heating prob so plz dont ask me why i have such high temps....thanks...

45 min to an hour of battery life??? That contradicts other owners and several reviews. What was laptop doing to guage the "loss"?

That's funny, because I didn't notice any signifigant loss of run time on battery power. Are you judging actual run time, or what the batt meter estimates?
