Hey folks,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I just picked up an MSI Turbo 2 motherboard (KT133A) for a cheapo upgrade on my wifes machine. While putting it together last night I noticed that the motherboard has a 12v P4 style connector on it in addition to the standard ATX power connector. The manual for the MB didn't mention how/why/under what conditions to use this connector. I didn't use the connector and the system seems to be running fine now.

My question is... why? :)

Thanks all,

Karim

While I'm sure someone more knowledgable can correct me, I believe it is mainly just to provide additional 12v voltage. It might never come into play with "normal" loads but is there nonetheless. I really don't think it is absolutely essential in most cases. I tried it both ways in my wife's system and didn't notice any difference but left it connected anyway. I believe there was a thread on this some time back and it was decided that there was a use for this "extra" voltage but it was not necessarily something you would have to deal with on a normal basis. Hopefully someone with a better memory can chime in here and shed a bit more light on this for you. I tried..................... :)

Thanks for the insight. I have it unplugged at the moment, if I have any stability issues perhaps I'll plug it in to see if that helps.
