question: Kobe Bryant's sentence if convicted... possible $750,000 fine. How would a regular Joe pay it?

If convicted, he faces four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation, and a fine of up to $750,000.

it would be easy for Kobe to pay it off... it's pocket change to him.

but if a regular guy on the street committed that crime and faced that penalty, he would basically have to work his whole life just paying that fine.

First off, I seriously doubt that any judge/jury would actually sentence that fine, knowing that it would mean financial disaster to the plaintiff.

If it did happen, the only solution that comes to my mind is declaring bankruptcy, or simply just not paying it. (But that would lead to more legal issues, I'm sure.)

You can't declare bankrupcy on fines.

If I sat in prison for 20 years, then got released and owed $750,000 to the government, I'm not going to make any effort to pay it off. Maybe find a bank to rob

well, you could bring up how unfair the system of fining a convicted criminal is.

if a crime is punishable by a fine, and two people commit the same crime, one who is rich and the other who is poor... it would be like a slap on the wrist to the rich one, while the poor guy is screwed for the rest of his life.
