I'm thinking of buying a dvd player (not for my computer), and I wonder if there is anyway to play vcd on a dvd player? If yes how, do I have to change anything on the vcd folder structure or?

at least from all the DVD players I have seen, they are compatible with vcd 2.0, so you should be able to play vcd there without any modification. the machine will know what to read.

I am sure there will be some exception, but again, most machines i have seen have that ability. look for vcd 2.0 compatibility.

Price doesn't help to know if it plays VCD, because many of the cheap ones do and many of the expensive ones don't. Look on the Panasonic website, but I think most of the Panasonics play VCD.

Edit.

If i'ts VCD on CD-R, most of the DVD players DON'T support it (but many do). However, many seem to work with some CD-RW discs.

He he.. I was just pointing out that I was going to buy this one anyway..

Well that sounds strange Eug but you might be correct, lets hope I'm lucky.. I'll get the player at work tomorrow so I'll have to chance to check it out. If it is just a bad player well then no no.

/me kind of tired of having a 20m long s-vhs cable from comp to TV..

My Panasonic DVD-A120 plays VCDs just fine. As long as they are burned onto CD-ROM (factory-made) or CD-RW. I haven't yet found any CD-R's that will work. Probably won't.

Ok.. this is my question then.. It was a panasonic DVD-a150 and it can handle vcd

But as you guys say.. cd -r is not liked by the dvd player... I have 4.. cd-rw cds.. that are used. Is there anyway to "format" it so I can copy cd to cd or do I just have to buy new cdrw every time I want to look at a vcd I want to watch..

I'm not sure what you mean, but CD-RWs are reusable. If you have a collection of 10 VCDs on your computer but only 2 CD-RWs, you could theoretically watch each of them in order, buy burning one at a time (or 2 rather, since 1 VCD movie usually takes up 2 CD's) and then use your burner's format utility to erase it (I think Nero has one built-in as well... it's just a function on the burner, every burner should have it).

A other question (might be stupid but what tha heck).

I see that most vcd I have they are in dat format and not mpeg. My dvd player do future vcd playing. But is this just for mpeg or do it also support dat?

It has to be in mpeg1 format for it to play on a DVD Player. You need to convert it using a plugin such as the Panasonic encoder plug in for Premeire. Go here and learn everything you will ever need to know:

Try different brand CD-RWs... try using NERO to burn a MPEG-1 (.mpg) file to it... can't think of any more tips at the moment.

I had finaly succes with playing my vcd on the dvd player. It seems that the first cdrw from tdk I had was kind of rippy. When used a new one the dvd player took it perfectly.

thx for the help guys. Oh oldie I want a answer from you

The Apex 600 is the most amazing pirate toy in the world.

plays burned vcds, and even svcds (which are amazing).

I have the Apex and keep all the MP3's at the root. Navigation on the Apex is not that great.

I just burn the mp3 files in the root directory. Make sure that the titles are as short as you can make them. If the titles are too long the DVD player will not open the directory.

Alot of stand alone DVD players carry warnings not to use CDRs in them (as the DVD laser can essentially bleach the dye layer).

Of the 3 or 4 DVD plays amongst my family and friends all of them can read VCDs.
