I bought a used motherboard off someone on the forums, and turns out one of the IDE controllers is rather flaky. It wouldnt recognize a harddrive for some reason. The other IDE did though, so I had it set up as master and slave

Now, I turn on the system today, and the onboard video is totally screwed up. Colors all over the place.....

I was wondering if one can tell if a motherboard is about to die? I ask becuase I initially had problems with this board (IDE controller), and now the video stopped working properly. Is it possible for someone to know when a board is on its way out?

UPDATE....................

Okay.......when I tried to load Win98, this is what it said on the screen.....

Standard mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender

I bought a used MB once. Turned out I just paid someone to assume their problem child. I'll never do it again. There are a lot of unscrupulous people out there that will sell a component that is giving them problems rather than toss it in the dumpster where it belongs. :(

Trying to look at the returned codes, it doesn't look like the problem is generated by the dos extender, and I think the next most logical item would be memory. If you can try a couple of different ram modules, try that and see if it goes away. Try reseating everything, that is CPU and ram modules and vid card, and see if that helps. With an old board, it may just be corrosion on contact points. You can clean contact points on edge connectors by GENTLY using a pencil eraser to clean them. Then again, the mobo may be beyond help.
