How are website driven by relatively (take that into some context) complex backends such as cold fusion or ASP, manipulated? An example of this would be seem in articles/reviews posted by large websites such as our very own Anandtech.com, Firing Squad, etc.?

Is a large amount of hand coding needed for each article? I understand that most of it is done through some sort of a template, but how are all of the page links, formatting, etc. done? Is it a visual interface similar to Dreamweaver or text based like Notepad?

Is that confusing?
