I am thinking of doing a terabyte file server and I was wondering how much improvement will I see going from a pcix 64(66mhz) to a pcix 64(133)?

Thanks

SATA drives still trying to decide on what type(PROBABLY THE 250gb drives from Hitatci)

I will probably go with RAID 5.

Edit:I need to stop posting so late at night. a terabtye server with 75 GB drives. right!!!

you're gonna do a terrabyte solution with 73gb drives in raid? Go SCSI or atlest 250GB SATA drives and raid them unless you really like the idea of having 15 drives in your box..

64 bit 66Mhz bus will have 533MB/s transfer rate. If you have 5 drives that is over 100MB/s, way more than a hard drive can sustane, although they can burst faster than that. This is, of course, assuming you have only the raid controller on the bus. speed increase with 133MHz bus will be negligable.

Is this server for personal or corporate use? If it's corporate, I would invest the extra money in some SCSI drives for reliability and speed.

It is for a small business/personal use.

What are the uses of the server?

Just serving up files?
Heavy database use?

If there is not a lot of database use, then even with gigabit ethernet the theoretical transfer in and out of the server is only 100 MB/s (much lower real world) so filesystem load will not be that bad.

Serving up files to other machines on your network I assume? Unless you have a gigabit network you don't notice any difference between pcix 64(66mhz) and pcix 64(133) because the drive system will probaby be able to outperform your network pretty easily ...
