in about 2 months, i'm going to have a baby of my own.. and i've been looking at mattresses... and it's freakin hard to decide.. innerspring? foam?? firm? extra firm?? i dunno!

if anyone out there has some suggestions, it'd be much appreciated.. i'm thinking i'll probalby be spending around $100 or so.. i want my kid to be safe, and comfortable..

so what do you parents own? what do you suggest as far as brands? what about shopping places?? of course b&m would be best to cut down on the shipping costs, but i'll pay shipping if i have to, to get a good mattress...

anyhow, thanks for your help

i say, get it a hard wood bed so that it grows up with an appreciation of the simple pleasures in life.

kids are light. Support isn't a big issue.
We had an inner spring crib mattress first and when the kids stirred at night, the mattress was noisy and would wake them up. I'd suggest foam. But it should be firm. You don't want them sinking into it and not being able to breathe.

you should be able to find a decent crib mattress for less than $50.

temper pedic!! sleeping well is key to life, if you can't get comfortable and fall asleep into a deep sleep then energy during the day will really be affected

For a newborn to toddler+... there is not enough weight for all the "extra's" to even play a part, to buy an expensive mattress. We are on our third child and have always bought the cheepest.

agreed. That and you will be buying a new bed/mattress in a year or two.

Now for the toddler bed, drop some cash on a good bed/mattress. I spent ~$400 on my son's bed and another$150 on his mattress. It has lasted 6 years without any problems.

Make sure to get a plastic protection cover especially if you go with foam.

We bought a convertible crib that'll end up as a full size bed. Right now it's converted into a toddle bed. It ran more than a regular crib but it'll last till they are out of the house. As far as matresses go, get a firm spring bed. Waterproof of course.

as an alternative, we went the route of using a co-sleeper before using a crib. the co-sleeper is like a mini-crib that you attach to the side of the bed and keeps the baby at about the same height as the bed. however, now that the baby can pull herself up to a standing position, we will be getting the crib mattress and putting the crib together.

for crib mattresses we found that target b&m had the same mattresses but was cheaper than babiesrus b&m.

Go cheap. I've never heard of a baby getting low-quality sleep because of the mattress quality.

Don't forget the mattress covers. One for dust (anti-allergies) because many babies have allergy issues - had a couple of those babies myself. The other type, of course, for liquid protection.

We never owned a crib (babies slept with us), but we did have toddler beds. We just got the best one from Walmart. Kids aren't too picky.

We got whatever one was decent at Wal-Mart, which I think was a Sealy. It's not as big of a deal with babies (as long as it's not so soft they sink into it), but one thing about getting a decent mattress is that when they're older, in a toddler bed (which uses the same size mattress), and they'll like to jump on it. Better have something that'll hold up ;)

And if you plan on having more kids, passing them down is a good idea. My newborn is using the mattress my older daughter used (a 7 month old and a 4 year old...I've going to have two teenage daughers at the same time --- expect me to be hiding out in here quite a bit in 12 years or so ;)

Unless you're seriously wealthy, go to the local thrift stores & grab something used, and donate it back to them when kiddo outgrows it.

well we found a mattress that i like.. it's $120, so i'm not going the cheap route apparently.. but it's a 2 in 1 mattress... one side is extra firm for when he's a newborn, and the other side is firm for when he's a toddler.. the crib we have is a 5 in 1.. i dunno what it all changes into, but i know that it's crib then toddler bed, then full bed.. then like a love seat or some crap.. like he'll need a love seat.. anyhow, so that means he'll be using the mattress for what.. 4 years or 5 years?? maybe 6? i dunno what that "toddler" range is..

anyway.. thanks for all the help, i'll keep it all in mind

edit: oh, btw, the one i'm thinking about is the colgate 2 n 1.. apparently very popular.. it's an innerspring.. the two sides each have different firmnesses..
