Ok, we don't want a big PA head now. (for a little band) so we are now looking to get a mixing board instead of a PA and use it for recording etc etc. Now I if I got one, such as a Tascam M-1508 or Yamaha MM1402, (basicly all these mixing boards are non-powered) I would just use a pre-amp to power them right? Then hook up the PA speakers and we are done correct? Thanks

No. A pre amp is basically an unpowered mixer except that it does not mix. It only processes one signal source at a time. You would run the output of the mixer to a power amp and then to the speakers.
