Question for you IT guys regarding remote network connections

A friend of mine owns a local inn/restaurant. Currently he has a relatively small network running (6 - 8 computers, plus server, I would guess). One of these computers is used strictly for reservations and the information is stored on the server. He plans to set up a reservationist working from home during the off hours to field incoming reservations and would like the ability for her to connect remotely from her home and enter in new reservation data. I don't believe the reservations software he uses supports remote connections directly.

Right now I'm simply in the process of putting together a quote for this project and looking for some preliminary ideas. I've been out of the computer/IT field for quite some time and most of my knowledge is with hardware and local networks anyway... so I'm looking for advice.

I've tinkered with the "Remote Desktop Connection" feature found in Windows XP. Is this a viable option for said scenario? Another friend mentioned Terminal Services might be better if he is running Win2K.

Assuming I get software like this setup on both PCs involved, how do I connect? This is where my knowledge on the subject is limited. Wouldn't I need an externally visible IP addy from the restaurant to which the reservationist could connect? Would this involve forwarding any port(s) on the firewall?

It might sound like I'm a little in over my head, but I'm confident I can make this work. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

vpn. You can get a vpn router for really cheap. Or just setup his server to accept vpn and make sure their current router accepts vpn passthrough. from there you just use remote desktop. VNC works but it difficult sometimes for non-savvy users because of the lag.

VPN or Remote Desktop with port forwarding would be easy to do. I would change the default port for RDP for an easy extra layer of security. I have been hit with a lot of RDP port scans on my firewall lately.

Many thinks to use: VNC, PC Anywhere, RDP, but no matter what you use, tunel it thru VPN or SSHv2 at the very least!
