Question for you Gateway techs regarding how to find drivers...

BIG EDIT:

After fighting the Gateway website with many attempts, I got the drivers. It turns out they have two serial number formats on their laptops. The driver page has a form to enter the sn, well, it won't take the long number, which is what I have. And manually searching for the model wouldn't produce any drivers. So I entered a tech support help/email form and was able to send them the serial number in a field. Their site remembered the sn as a cookie I suppose, and now the driver download form had the sn remembered and provided a link to click to get the drivers. Sure enough, they were all there. I still don't know why going the manual way wouldn't provide the drivers. I know for sure I selected the proper model.

Anyway, I hope this info helps other folks some day.

So my dad bought a Gateway MX7118 laptop the other day from Best Buy. Of course there isn't much with it, and a lovely install of Windows XP Media Center... That won't do for his office use though, I had to install XP Pro. No sweat. I wipe the drive, install XP Pro, all is well.

Well, one slight problem, no drivers... Naturally Gateway does not have downloads available for this model. They only offer "updates", but there are none to get...

So, I had my dad go back to BB for a driver cd. They said they can't give him one, and directed us to this web site:

http://support.gateway.com/s/software/medialess/mlxph1/mlxph1su3.shtml

So, here's my question. Anyone here know of a better way to get these drivers? I don't want to have to do a full recovery from the recover CD just to get these dang drivers that Gateway won't give us on a dedicated disc...

edit: this thread here is related, and doesn't look promising... thread link

edit: I'll try using pc wizard tonight and see if that shows me what chipsets to get drivers for. pcwizard link

You could possibly get the drivers for each individual component but only if you know what they are.

I did a quick search last night on driverguide.com, nothing came up.

I'm going to figuring out what each component is tonight, that's where the pcwizard software comes in. Will see how that goes. I'm not holding my breath...

Karaktu pointed out a hidden partition on the drive, which of course I wiped... That probably has the drivers if I did a restore. That's a last resort solution right now though. I hate having to re-install the OS multiple times just to get stuff working. Shouldn't be that hard.

I'm still pissed that Gateway doesn't offer the appropriate downloads via their support website...

Have your dad pack up the Gateway and return it. Then go somewhere else and buy another brand with comparable features.

Gateway must have some propriatary hardware in their system. I purchased a dell inspiron 8150 which came preloaded with win xp home. Loaded xp pro and everything worked on it. Then loaded linux no problems their either.

Guess that might be a solution other than returning the computer. Get a live cd version of linux and see if that works. If so, install linux and use the option to wipe existing OS.

No can do on the return. 15% restock fee.

As for Linux, well, that's not gonna happen for a office laptop for a lawyer. This has to work 100% with his 3 other desktops, all Win 2000 and XP, and he doesn't have the time to try to learn apps in Linux. Not to mention the various printers, scanners, etc. that have Windows only software. It's a fine idea for someone who is more computer literate, but not for the average business user who uses it as a tool to earn a living.
