Question for you builders

would you ask for to build a system? I ask because I have been asked to build a system for a friend of mine. He says he would gladly pay me for my time, but what is fair? I mean I know that my friend is quite well off (expendable income) and that I have been unemployed for 9+ months, so a nice gain from this transaction is not out of the question or unwelcomed.

I know that there are other builders in this forum and I figure that some of you have built for a 'living'. What is fair? My boyfriend figures that asking for 15% of the final cost is not at all a bad thing, which in this case would be $275. Would you agree with him?

Thanks for your time.

For a friend? I would do it for free, but if he insisted on paying I would only ask for maybe $50. Then again, I enjoy assembling PCs.

Well, normally I would do it for free. Hell, I enjoy doing this too and have had the itch to 'build/upgrade' for months. However, being unemployed (no longer getting unemployment from the state) with bills, I figure a 'fee' would be nice.

I would think 15% would be on the steep side unless it was a complicated set-up. I typically run between 7-10% on my jobs.

If it's for a friend, I'd do it for free. If he insists, get dinner. I try to not let money get in the way of helping buddies out. That's just my opinion.
