question for you audio buffs -- using the preamp outs on my receiver for external amp hookups

Hey everyone,

So I have a wonderful Sony GX808ES receiver, and it has preamp outs. I just picked up a pair of Rotel Amps used, and I *should* be able to hook up the Amps to the receiver, and bypass its amp section. I am sort of curious how to hook this up properly.

(This will take me from 85w / channel @ .04% THD to 180w /channel @.03% THD 🙂 )

The receiver has two "short plugs" on the back of it which route "Pre Out" to "Main In" for the left and right channels.

I assume that I should just take out the short plugs, plug an rca cable from the "Pre Out" to the inputs on the Rotel amps, one for each channel; then plug the speakers into the ampllifiers.

Do I need to put anything into the "Main in" plug on the receiver now? Anything else I need to do to set this up properly?

I've never tried it. I have the 900ES, I know if you hook up the amps you can use the Sony to power your rear speaker, assuming you have some. If you don't get an answer, PM me and I will look it up in my manual.
