Question for you 7600 GT users

As now I guess you would call a budget video card, I just ordered the EVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB from Newegg to go in my XP Athon64 XP4800+ system. Sadly I found that even the advanced for onboard graphics Radeon X1250 will not play Half Life 2 at 1024x768 very well.

A couple of questions I have, do you think this card will play Half Life 2 and all the addons, notably Lost Coast well at 1024x768? As I don't see well, I rarely up the resolution any higher than that but should I choose to do so, will it play these games ok at the monitors native resolution of 1280x1024? I'm hoping the card will be better then my previous system card of a 9800 Pro. This coupled on my P4 2.26 system barely could play half life at 800x600 although still better then the onboard graphics of this mb.

Also, the biggest complaint about the board I read in user reviews is the fan noise, notably in many cases it gets quite noisy and imbalanced in a matter of just a few months. Any recommendations of an aftermarket cooler, preferably the quieter the better?

Thanks for any replies.

Yes, I guarantee you it will play Half Life 2 and Lost Coast. I installed this same card ( evga 7600GT ) in my brother's pc, and he runs Half Life 2 at 1280 res whether it is with AA or HDR and gets perfect smooth game play.

The 7600GT will be several times faster than your previous 9800Pro. Don't worry, it will run it fine.

Here are some Benchmarks for the 7600GT and Half Life 2

I have an EVGA 7600GT (256-P2-N550 -T2) installed in my machine at work. The fan does spin up during 3D apps, but it really only ramps up to a hissing sound. It is certainly audible, but it isn't an annoying sound as it isn't a very high or low pitch. It's just a constant hiss that doesn't waver or vibrate. It also seldom spins up during normal use. I can't really attest too much about it's performance, since it was primarily purchased for me to run dual DVI monitors (which is does nicely) and a special project that required me to run a 3D app that was beyond the abilities of the onboard Intel GMA950.

I don't have a 7600GT, so I can't comment on the fan noise.

I do have a 7600GS, which is a slightly less powerful card, and I'm still able to play HL2 at 1024 x 768 with high settings and high frame rates. From a performance standpoint, you'll have no trouble.

Like I said though, no idea about fan noise/alternate cooling solutions.

The fan on my eVGA 7600gt is really loud whenever I use a 3d application so I set it be at 35% fan speed in Rivatuner. The card gets a little hot under load (~65C) but its quiet 🙂

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know there is fan control and it will spin less while PC is idle. It's so hard to believe the prices as this is a $75 card after rebate. I paid $300 for an original Geforce and then $200 for my Radeon 9800 Pro. Hopefully will get it Thursday or Friday. I hope this card will do me until I decide to get or put Vista on a machine in which I'm in no hurry to do at this point.

I have a 7600gt running at 644mhz core and 800 memory, it runs Team Fortress 2 at max settings at 1440x900 with around 40 fps. HL2 is not a prolem.
