now i've got 2 sets of large, long beutiful, vulominous twins, with vibrant minds, and bashfully blinking.....

HD indicator lights. We just got in our second Hp server. its a beaut. sitting next to its slightly less powerfull sister. them cases are like 3 ft deep (no rack for us) you could line em up and make an aircraft carrier out of them. And then below them we've got a set of double wide servers, kindof seperated, as one is a novell, and the other is an NT server., maybe I'll post some pics later of their beuty...

oh just neffing about some servers...

i am not a big fan of the HP servers. We have one, and the case is huge, but i go dell all the way. At work we have 1 HP, 7 Dells, 2 VA and a Sun. I really like the design of the Dell Poweredge 4400

We have HP servers and I hate them. We're also running Novell which doesn't help things. :|

Yea, the pedestal case are HUGE.

Yea, the manuals say they weigh close to 200lbs fully loaded and require at least two people to carry them. I;m sitting on a LH3 right now posting from my laptop. Hiding out here is nice if you can stand the noise. The fans in these badboys are huge.

heh, but could you build a better server than them? stability wise? one of our lh 3's has redundant nics, 3 battery backed up hot swapable psu's 4 hot swapaable drives... hey where the heck can you get a case with redundant psu's like that? and the inside of those cases, how they run the cables, would make any neat freak shamed. they've got like 3 12omm's next to each other onto the drive bays, and another 80mm above them.

Actually the aircraft carrier analogy is not that far off.

Weight (Light): 120Lbs
Weight (Combat): 150lbs
Weight (Full): 180lbs+

Someone gave me a (severly stripped) HP server case w/ some internals... a 486 to be precise. That thing was the biggest waste of PCB space that I've ever seen. The backplane was 50% bare, the CPU card was 70% bare. It was pathetically wasteful and still not service friendly nor pretty.

I ended to tearing it apart and trashing most of the parts. (they were proprietary)

the poweredge at my work has 2 120mm and about 4 80mm, 6 hot swappable hdds, 3 PSU that is attached to 3 different UPSes(redundancy). I like the sleek black case too =]

Ark, do wouldn't happen to know where I can get a 64MB SIMM for the NetRAID LH3 controller? We have 16MB right now and massive disk writes can get pretty hairy. HP wants something like $300. No way am I paying that. I recently dumped another 512MB of Registered SDRAM (Micron) in there for $400.

For the RAID controller. The HP stuff is around $300 for 64MB :|.

Right now Micron is so cheap (w/ free 2 day shipping) that I just went with them for system memory. 512MB Registered ECC PC100 for $400.

windogg, the raid controller takes proprietary? or edo? I didn't look closly yesterday. But we just went with what the controller came with.
We use, I think, the same card in all 4 systems, and I don't think we upped any of them.

We have one that we use novell with, its got a raid 5 with 4 18gb drives; in a 56gb logical. We use it for nearly everything, and combine 100mb pdf's on it. Sometimes it can get pretty loaded, and slow. Would you suggest maybe upping the ram on the raid card to improve speed?
