They were called "elephant ears" and they were supposed to keep the smoke from pooling around the cab/engine area. Certain engines with low pressure in the smokestack tended to get the smoke pooling or clinging to the cab area. These were an attempt to get that smoke away from the cab.
 
The engine will be leaving Tucson tomorrow morning and heading to Phoenix.

Still time to catch it tomorrow morning at the depot downtown, 0820-0915. It will be under steam then which is much neater than when parked cold. The only thing you miss is the peek in the cab.

Yeah, but Cars and Coffee is at La Encantada at 8🙂

Also going to go to the Rosemont meeting tomorrow to laugh at the idiots present.
