PCI-e 2.0 is backwards compatible, so there should be no issues. Whoever says that you NEED PCI-e 2.0 to have an 8800GT work is wrong.

That being said, I have a Gigabyte S3 (PCI-e 1.0) and it works perfectly.

Wrong. Do a search and you'll find a good number of PCIE 1.0a motherboards are not compatible with PCIE 2.0 video cards.

Your mobo uses a PCIE 1.1 slot which is compatible with PCIE 2.0.

from anand's original 8800gt article, it says that pcie 2.0 should be backwards compatible w/ 1.0 and 1.1:

of course, they can't account for every situation and any possible deviations from specs. so how does one go about checking pcie version? i have an ecs kn1 lite mobo (s939, nf4) and an msi 8800gt from dell on order. i'm hoping that they work and my 500 wtt (+12V1 18A, +12V2 16A) ultra xfinity holds up. also, the heat issues are concerning too especially since i don't have any open slots available for dual slot solutions/coolers.

I had a BFG 8800GT on a Biostar Tforce 6100 939 mAtx mobo working flawlessly for 2 weeks, after which I returned it to get in on the Dell MSI deal. Now I know for sure that my mobo was PCIe 1.0a and not PCIe 1.1 I ordered a Foxconn Nforce4 SLI mobo, which is PCIe 1.0a as well, I'm crossing my fingers, but I think that both of the cards should work in SLI. Though that I can tell for sure only when they get here.

I have a Nforce 6100/430 working with 8800GT. PCIe 1.0a also.

This stupid rumor about compatibility started from some AsRock users having problems (most with AGP+PCIe motherboards) and was blown out of proportions. I have yet to see one user with an Nvidia motherboard chipset not working, yet I see hundreads of posts from people asking if theirs will work.
