I've decided on purchasing 2 iPod Mini's as a wedding gift for my best friend and his bride to be. Yeah yeah, I know it's expensive, but he's my best friend whom I've known for over 25 years. Anyway, will I need to purchase Firewire cards or can the Mini's do file transfer and recharging via USB only? One of these people has older USB which is not 2.0.

The iPod Mini works with both USB 2.0 and Firewire... I'm pretty sure its fine with USB 1.0 as well.

It'd be slow as hell though, it'd be well worth the $20 or whatever for a USB 2.0 or firewire card.

The battery only charges off of powered firewire (only on desktops) or off a wall charger. Its much more convenient to charge it off firewire, but I can't since I have a laptop. Btw I have a 3G regular iPod, but I assume it works the same way.

iPod minis come with the usb cable so they can transfer from USB 2.0 and 1, charge, I'm not so sure.

Apple laptops will charge the iPod over firewire.

AFAIK, USB2.0 devices are always backwards compatible with USB1.1 although working extremely slow.
