Ok, so my dad buys a Barrett m99 .50 and it comes with a 1400 dollar leupold mark IV scope. He got it as a package deal for 3900 bucks which isnt bad at all. But now he wants a more economical "sniper" type gun seeing as .50 costs about $1.40-$1.60 a round. So he got an ar lower from rock river arms and at a gun show he got a 20 inch bull barrel i think. With the aluminum handguard n upper n stuff. Harris bipod etc. But now he wants a scope and i said he should go with a bushnell legend 5-15x 40 mm mil dot scope. i think its also illuminated. He wants excellent quality because he experienced what a really nice scope is on that barret, so its going to be hard to please him. But its a .223 ar, so its not like its going to reach out REALLY far. Anyways.... any suggestions on a scope thats under 350 dollars that has say at LEAST 12x and 40mm. NO tasco, bsa, etc. I think hes going to feed it good ammo... so its going to be awesomely accurate for a .223. Its REALLY heavy..

EDIT: by the way i know ALOT about guns... im just seeing if anyone has any good scopes in mind...

I would go with a leopold. All the glass I own is Leopold. Well worth the money for the quality construction and glass you get.

And .223 will reach out REALLY far. Not as accurate at the .50 out that far. but acurate enough to do damage.

BTW if he is interested I have a .50 Beowulf Upper for an AR-15 I would like to sell. Its a .50 caliber round that works with a standard .223 AR lower. PM me if you want some more information if you are interested.

I get mine from riflescopes.com You can get some leopold VX-II for around $300, and that would be a nice enough scope for a AR. VX-III can be had for a couple hundred more. But for a .223 AR I would just get a VX-II. Thats what I have on my beowuld and I love it.

"Sniper weapon" and .223 should not be used in the same sentence. A great scope on any type of Ar-15 type weapon is kind of a waste. It is only going to hold so-so groups.

Well, i meant an ar isnt going to go a mile accurately. I guess im comparing it to a .50 too much. It is a very accurate, fast round. However it is small, and i find that wind moves it around a bit, so windy shootin with .223 isnt always that great. True though it will go far. I suppose on a dead calm day it would be fine.

Tell that to the US Army Rangers.

They show up at the range once a year and proceed to shoot 600 yards, and put 10 in the 10 ring with iron sights.

not true. not true at all. It extremly accurate. I have one personally with a 16 inch barrel and a collapsable stock with that handguard mount ontop and i shot dimes off a piece of duct tape at 150 yards. that was with a BSA scope. it was on sale for 69 bucks at gander mountain...

I have seen it done. Its very impressive to see that small caliber bullet shoot that accurate/that far, but it is very possible.
