Question for those of you who lift weights....

GoingUp

Lifer
Do you drink suppliment drinks? I was going to start drinkin protein shakes to help add the muscle, but I was wondering if its better before the workout, after the workout, or before bed to drink it....

Any input would be appreciated...

try to eat real protein and not a shake before bed so you slowly digest it, and after workout is a good time aswell.. i have one in the morning and after my workout..

I had read that it's best to drink it within 30 minutes before or after a workout. And if you are hungry or something at night before bed, instead of eating a snack you should just drink a protein shake.

I drink a protein shake when I get up, after my workout, and about an hour before bed. I get about 40 grams of protein in each shake (two scoops of powder).

edit: I do not allow the drinks to replace my normal diet. They are in addition to my normal diet, which is higher in complex carbs early in the day, and higher in protein late in the day.

Fish, chicken, turkey, lean ham and lean pork. And remember, there is good fat as well. Not all fat is bad, and you NEED some fat in your diet.

You don't have to swear off beef, just eat lean cuts in moderation.

What?

A 6 oz can of tuna offers just short of 40 grams of protein and ony about 200 calories, roughly 15 of which is from fat.

Yeah, that's good advice. I've been lifting weights for a solid 4 years now, started back in 8th in prep for high school football. I really believe the answer isn't protein shakes and other suppliments.. it's just eating WELL and working HARD. I didn't have the cash for protein drinks and such, that stuff is so expensive and protein, especially pure whey protein, has a tendancy to turn right into a nice gut which I didn't want. So basically I just made sure to eat like 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches after my lift and I basically had a diet of chicken/lean beef rarely/fish/etc.. I lifted a good 2 hours 4 days a week.. I was 185 2 years ago and for this past season I got up to 225, I'm about 230 now with, I'll admit, a LITTLE bit of fat around the mid section, some love handels and such.. problem area for me. But I did it the natural way, and also cheaply..

Dunno how much that little story will help, but it's what I've done. 🙂

I take protein shakes right after I work out... .if i had time in the mornings I'd drink one in the morning too.

You should only take protein if you want to build more mass, in other words gain weight. If you're trying to get more cut, don't drink protein shakes....

A rule of thumb for individuals lifting weights is to get 1 gram protein/lb of bodyweight. You should eat protein throughout the day, from a variety of sources. Protein powders, drinks, bars, etc. are great for convenience. I prefer to get as much of my protein from "real food" as possible just for variety's sake.

A whey protein drink is ideal for post-workout nutrition. In the window of time following the workout, a fast absorbing protein is beneficial for muscle growth. Including some simple carbs with the drink will boost insulin, which is anti-catabolic, and help replenish glycogen in the muscles. There's nothing wrong with continuing to consume post-workout protein drinks while you're on a diet (in fact it's good, it helps preserve muscle while dieting), just be aware of the calories you're consuming. If you're trying to lose weight, you would probably want to reduce the carbs in the drink.

You can drink the whole thing immediately after the workout, or you can split it up and drink half before and half after.

I always mixed my protein drink with milk, another form of protein, and some carbs, what does everyone else mix it with?>

i take N large. I take it any time on a rest day, then post workout on workout days. You need fast digesting protein after workout you see

if you don't want more calories, just get some whey and dextrose

you forgot egg whites, the mother of protien, though personally i don't really like them/can't be arsed to make them

I drink a serving of Biotest Low-Carb grow w/ 125g cottage cheese for breakfast, 50% of a serving of Biotest Surge immediately before working out about 11 hours later, and 50% after. And yes, a good post-workout drink is a must.

This is just plain wrong. The recommended amount of protein is 1-1.5g/lb of body weight for maximum muscle gain - something you definitely want whether you're bulking up or losing fat.
