Do you think divorce should be outlawed as well. It destroys familys. If you got married in a church, you took an oath to God, till death do you part. Seems to me we should outlaw it like the good old days.

we should ban marriages in general. Take the government out of marriage. Leave it to the churches and religious places

I agree, and at that point, we'll see who's against the civil union, and i'll show you the face of a bigot.

That almost makes sense, in an atheistic kind of way. :)

But will never happen in America.

All that would do is raise the mortality rate due to partitioning. :Q

the old testiment has laws about how to perform a divorce, if it were wrong, why would they have a method on how to get one?

God doesn't like divorce, but sometimes it is needed. I think marriage is a sacred thing and if possible, every effort should be taken to make it work. We all make mistakes though, and homosexuality is one of the more wide spread ones in today's society.

Why should what a mythical entity likes or doesn't like matter to us ?

is it not common in other countries that first, you get "married" in the eyes of the country and then you go (if you choose) to get married before a diety through a religious ceremony?

Okay, now calm down and read very carefully.

No, divorce should not be against the law. Ending a marriage through divorce is the SAME as dissolving a partnership. Only the wording is different.

In the same manner, conservatives ONLY want to preserve the WORD marriage as being a union between a man and a woman.

They have no problem with legal partnerships between gays, with all of the legal rights of marriage. JUST A DIFFERENT WORD TO DESCRIBE IT!

Why? Because they don't want to mainstream an alternative lifestyle. Call gay unions whatever you want, we're just saying reserve the WORD marriage for male/female partnerships.

Gays wanting to have the word "marriage" is just a poke at traditional values, it makes a joke of the rest of society. It has nothing to do with gay rights because Bush has already said he is for legal partnerships with all of the rights of marriage.

I strongly believe gay rights should be protected and they should have all of the rights of non gays.

And I also believe they can come up with another word if they don't like the phrase legal partnerships.

Why do we have to change the definition of a word? I don't get it.

BTW, I had a 2 gay roommates during my 4 years in college and we were great friends. I respect anyone's choice of lifestyle as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

First off, I am calm - just curious.

By your rational, why would segragation be wrong. Seperate but equal, right?

We change definitions of words whenever it's necessary to reflect the usage of the word. Heck, we invent new words when needed. Why the hell is it such a big deal to call it marriage? Will it make straight married couples any less married? Will it make them gay?
Gays wanting to use the same word that EVERYONE ELSE gets to use is not a joke. It's not a poke at traditional values, it's wanted to be treated EQUALLY. Not a difficult concept. I fail to see how allowing gays to use the word marriage affects the current institution of marriage in any way, shape, or form.

Are you serious? I tried to explain that I am NOT against gay rights, just the WORD used to describe them! Let me try again although you seem to really have the blinders on.

Segragation was wrong, it is wrong, and it always will be wrong. NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL IT!

Denying gays equal rights to non-gays would be WRONG no matter what you called it. I am for equal rights for gays, just don't call the union marriage, CALL IT ANYTHING ESLE YOU WANT AND THAT WOULD BE THEIR WORD. I'll not use it.

Wow, you put a spin on that one!

nakedfrog -

Yes, we do change the meaning of words all the time, and when over 50 or 60% of all marriages are gay marriages we should change the definition of that word as well. At least we can agree on that!

And once again,

I DO NOT BELIEVE IN MAINSTREAMING AN ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE.

As far as being treated equally, legal unions do that so it's not about that. It's about thumbing your nose at traditional America. Hey man, do your thing, that's cool. Just don't call it marriage because most people believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. How does that deny anyone their rights if they can have all of the legal rights associated with marriage? Huh? Can you answer that?

Finally, if gays want to be TREATED equally they won't use that word for their unions. That will only stir the pot and cause them to be ridiculed by intolerant people.

You sound like me 20 years ago when I was in college at Rutgers as I was trying to make sense of the world.

Try to keep in mind that you are arguing with somebody who believes strongly for equal rights for EVERYBODY. It's just the use of a word we're arguing about, not the rights behind it.

Thank you for your time.

I would agree with Hulk, but most that oppose gay marriage oppose gay civil unions and giving gays any benefits whatsoever.

i am for gays incorporating...they form a legal partnership where all assets are owned by the corporation and each owns a 50% stake.

Dissolution would be difficult and painful but possible.

The legal side of the corporation deals with visitation rights and such.

Yes, it does.

Dems need to drop the gay marriage issue. It's widely unpopular (in every state where a measure to ban gay marriage has appeared on that ballot, that measure has passed by a landslide), we live in a democracy where officials are elected through popular vote, and it just cost you a very important election. Had the Dems not pressed this unpopular issue, they likely would have won the White House.
It doesn't matter whether you think that people against gay marriage are "bigots" or not. You're pissing into the wind.
