Question for the Mountain Bikers

Conky

Lifer
I got my eye on a Motobecane 700 HT Mountain Bike.

Any yays or nays as far as opinion?

Seems like a pretty solid bike to me but I bought my last mountain bike like 20 years ago, lol. So I am a bit out of the loop.

my friend who is just getting into mtb biking bought a 700ht very recently. its decent entry-level bike that will probably be fine enough for a beginner/someone just getting into mtn biking. whether its a good choice or not depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Looks like a damn fine price. First upgrades I would get are lighter wheels (less mass to rotate, so "feels" lighter and easier to ride and accelerate) and a less upright stem (connects your handlebars to the rest of the bike).

Email them and try to get an answer on how much the bike weighs. Sub-27 pounds is good. Over 27 pounds and it might start feeling like a brick.

Motobecane's site says it weighs 29.8 lbs which seems pretty decent seeing how I can get this bike delivered for less than $500(only a little less though)

Hmmm... I guess that's kinda ok. Kinda. Back in the day (about four years ago) I got my dual suspension Diamondback for $500. Weight was 30lb even. I want to say that 30lb for a hardtail at that price is actually just an average deal. I would suggest go to a bike store and look at their offerings.

The thing that's good about the 700 is the rear derailler is XT, and if you don't know, Shimano's lineup goes like this from Best to Worst (IIRC):

XTR, XT, Deore LX, Deore, Alivio, Acera

Deore and LX and generally VERY servicable.
