Question for the Home Theater crowd...

So I got a new Sony WEGA TV and connected it to my home theater... I got a Onkyo SR600 Receiver with Polk Audio speakers. My question is, I connected the TV to the receiver using the component video cables, but how do I connect the TV to my receiver so that I can hear sound from my Polk Audio speakers while watching regular cable TV? I already managed to this for my DVD player so I can enjoy DVDs but I just want to test out my speakers for cable TV as well. Any ideas?

Here are the hookup diagrams for my receiver: http://www.us.onkyo.com/hookup.cfm?new=y&m=TX-SR600

And here is how the back of my Sony TV looks like:

So I used the connections on #4 to connect to my receiver (the top 3) so I am guessing I need to use the bottom two to connect to my receiver, but which ports?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You could either use audio out RCA's from your TV to go into your receiver or if you have a cable box with audio outs, you could use that.

I dunno, whichever one you want to use. Don't you have one for TV or DBS or whatever?

Your TV may have a setting for fixed or variable audio output. Variable audio output means that the volume of the RCA outputs is controlled by the TV volume. Fixed audio output means that the RCA output volume works independently of the TV volume.

I usually use fixed audio output and turn the volume on my TV all the way down. Otherwise, I'll look for an option to disable the TV speaker and set the TV's volume control to a reasonable level.

I see the one for TV has no audio inputs.

I would connect the audio outs on your TV into the Cable/Satellite Tuner audio ins on your receiver.

Then when you watch TV, you'll just have to have your receiver on and set to the Cable/Sat box setting.

Most of the TV I have experienced are vary. Which mean DVD > TV > Audio Receiver and when I turn up the Volume on TV the Audio Receiver get turn up too. Some DVD even have a volume of it's own to turn up even more.

Another setup you can do is DVD to TV and the Optical of the DVD go to Optical of Audio Receiver. This way you can still hear on TV but if you want better sound you can mute the TV and turn on Audio Receiver.

In general, the quality of TV speakers is very poor. You should avoid using them at all and rely on the vastly superior amps and speakers in the rest of your HT setup.
