Question for the gun nuts on here

All summed up I want a shotgun for home defense because my neighborhood is really shady at times. I have not taken any gun safety classes (but definetly plan to, required or not) or hunting safety classes or any of that. I've read the FAQ's on the bureau of firearms website, and all that said was that I have to be 18 (check) have valid id (check) and wait 10 days before I can buy a rifle or shotgun. That's it?

oh and I'm located in CA

Remington 870

Cheap, easily serviceable, and extremely reliable.

No waiting time here in CO though.

You will go in and they will run a background check and you come back later to get it.

Like Odin said, Remington 870. Or you could also try out another common one in the Mossberg 500.

The real question is 00 Buck or Slugs 😉 Practice in general is important, but even more so with slugs.

Also, make sure to check to see if California has restrictions on what configurations you can legally own regarding shotguns.

yea, the gun laws in CA was what I made the post about, but many thanks for the shotgun recommendations too, I'll go do some research

I don't know if they require that you take a safety course or not in CA. When I lived there, I had already done it and had hunting licenses and such. But then I never bought a gun there because I'd just borrow whatever I wanted from my dad 😛

There ya go. CA's complete laws on firearm ownership.

Just quickly browsing:
18"+ on the barrel.
No collapsible stock + pistol grip.

As far as personal requirements, 18+, valid ID, and 10-day waiting period is it for shotguns.

Both 870 and the Mossberg 500 are nice guns for personal protection. There can also be some good deals on used ones as well. Have you visited you local gun shop? Even pawn shops sometimes have nice used guns for not a lot of money.

One other brand to consider should be the NEF or H&R (one bought the other and then Marlin bought them) Pardner Protector Pump. They are an 870 clone and seem to get decent reviews.
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
One knock is that they are made in China but the quality seems nicer than many other more expensive guns and about on par with the 870 Express. They can be found for under $200 new. I am seriously considering getting one for myself. My dealer sells them for $170 which I think is a pretty good deal and he seems to like them. Might be worth a look anyway.
