Let's say you are Seller S and agree to sell an item to Buyer B for $450.
Buyer B sends you a personal check for $450.
You ship the item to Buyer B via FedEx and insure the item for $500.
Upon e-mailing Buyer B the FedEx tracking number, you cash Buyer B's check for $450.
The item arrives at Buyer B's location but the box appears to be damaged.
Buyer B then e-mails you claiming that FedEx damaged the item.

What happens next between Buyer B and Seller S to rectify the situation?

(This is not an actual situation; purely hypothetical.)

Seller S must file a claim with FedEx. Depending on Buyer B's credibility, a refund to Buyer B is issued now or after FedEx settles the claim.

This doesn't make any sense.

Fixed: Can Seller S send the item back to Buyer B before Seller S makes the claim with FedEx?

Edit: Would of course refund Seller S for $450 if she can send it back via a FedEx (insured) and I can still file a claim. I just wouldn't want her to have the item AND be refunded and not be able to file a claim.

....You don't have to be so non-specific in the future.

Seller S would only issue a refund after the item is returned and potentially only after FedEx settles Seller S's claim.

You're still not making much sense, but I think Im getting you. Seller S wouldn't send the item back to buyer B.

You're trying to ask if Buyer B would send the item back to Seller S before Seller S files a claim, no?

Would S file the claim before B has returned the item or can B return the item (also FedEx insured) to S, then S files a claim with FedEx?

Edit: I totally confused myself in the above posts :)

There is no reason Seller S would file the claim before receiving the damaged item back. Once Seller S gets the item back to verify damage, Seller S files a claim with FedEx. If this was on ebay, Seller S then waits for FedEx to settle the claim before giving a refund.

After getting the damaged item back from the Buyer.

Actually, you as the Seller could file the claim at any time. FedEx will issue compensation to you as the Seller. You as the Seller would just not issue a refund to the buyer without getting the item back.

NP and feel free on the PMs. Next time though, please don't use this Seller S/Buyer B thing...it doesn't work well. ;)

With USPS I, the buyer, filed the claim, had the item inspected, and received compensation. I did have to have the seller send over a copy of the shipping receipt to prove that insurance was purchased. I'm thinking it should be similar with FedEX.

Why would you receive insruance compensation and the item. That doesn't add up.
