Question for music game playing folks

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
Seems like Rock Band and Guitar Hero are taking two different approaches now. Rock Band is dropping DLC on what seems like a weekly basis while DLC for Guitar Hero is few and far between. Meanwhile, there are actually something like three new Guitar Hero games coming for 2008 if I'm not mistaken. Guitar Hero IV and two add-on packs for Guitar Hero III.

Which route do you prefer?

Well if the prices end up being the same, I'd rather have DLC. That way I could play all the songs from one disc, and not swap between them when one song I wanna play isn't on the current game.

Right. I forgot to mention that. The DLC for Rock Band is $5.50 for three songs or $2 per song. The Guitar Hero add-ons are what? $40? Full game is $60? You can hit add-on/full game price with 8-11 song packs.

I'd prefer a whole new edition instead of the one-offs. That doesn't mean I still haven't purchased some GH3 songs, but you just get more for your money with a full game.

I prefer the DLC route. It's all about convenience, all the songs are right there, no switching disc and reloading the game. DLC also gives you the option of only downloading the songs you like which imo is huge. Sure the add-ons might come with 50 new songs but I can usually count on 10-20 of those being crappy bonus tracks noone wants to play. I'd much rather pay a little extra if it means more customization.

The addons aren't really addons anyway. They're just a new game slapped together with using the old version. If they created addons that just dump a bunch of DLC, character models, venues and a single player tour to the hard disc and let you continue to use the orginal game assets as well that'd be pretty cool.

There are too many unknown variables for me to decide between the two options presented. Will I be able to transfer my existing RB DLC to Rock Band 2? In the "New Retail Game", are there new features or just new songs?

It's not an exact answer to your question, but thus far, I greatly prefer the Rock Band way of doing things to Guitar Hero's.

It really depends though. Like RandomFool mentioned, I usually don't like every song in the full games and it's nice to have some choice in what you get.

the way rockband dlc is going, I prefer a whole new game. but if it wasnt as bad as 3 new songs EVERY single week @ 2 bucks a pop, I would prefer DLC.

I know this has been brought up before, but I just don't understand your logic. If you don't like them, just don't buy them.

Me? I wish they'd release 20 songs a week @ 2 bucks a pop just so we can pick and choose what we like. For every song I liked in GH3 there was a Slayer, Slipknot, or White Zombie track that I know factored into the $90 price tag.

and as i said before, your missing the point.

put it this way, what if i want all the songs, but dont want to pay nearly 24 dollars a month for them? thats about 2 months worth of any regular MMO subscription.

im not picky, i like all the songs, i just can afford to buy them all. i wish they were cheaper. also picking and choosing doesnt work perfectly, some songs you like because you like the song, and some songs you like because you like to play it in the game. it might help if they had some way to demo it.

So just because you compulsively "want all the songs", you would rather take away others' ability to have more songs available to them than exercise self-control? Sorry, that just sounds selfish to me.

If it helps, every Tuesday morning there is a YouTube video posted of all the expert guitar runthroughs and later in the day someone will usually get around to posting the full 4-player runthrough.

Right, but you get more than just new songs when you get a new title. You don't see them releasing new venues or characters, or even online functionality via DLC.

That being said, I wont be buying GH: Aerosmith 😉

That's what I was trying to get at in my first post. If Rock Band 2 is announced and it has an online Band World Tour mode, then I'd absolutely prefer a whole new game with the caveat that my DLC is transferable (Harmonix has stated they hope to make this the case).

But sometimes even new features can backfire. Here's looking at you, GH3 Battle Mode... ugh.

Its a toss-up. Personally, I wish they'd come up with a really good one that you could put your own music into, but I realize that is not going to happen for the reason that they'd lose out on a ton of money. Also, I hope Guitar Hero III is not going to be a trend of how things are going to go, but I have a bad feeling it is. I'm referring to the excessive ads. I was kinda surprised though when I recently read two higher-ups in the gaming world say they don't think in game advertising really is working (and one of the guys was an EA exec).

I think Microsoft could really help themselves if they integrate the Zune Marketplace into the Live Marketplace (or rather the content), and then make it so that if you buy a song that way you can use it in Guitar Hero. They'd probably have to raise the price a bit though (I think the what is it $2 per song is outrageous since you can only use it on that game, whereas you can pay half that and use it just about anywhere you want).

I think this is actually a lot like sports games. Many say that instead of a new Madden every year, just release an update as DLC.

I would be for this, only under 1 condition - the initial game has been perfected.

In the case of sports games, Madden in particular, they're a ways away from perfecting the title, so a simple roster update every year is insufficient. I think when they finally get the foundation right, and the gameplay to a point where it's incredible, then a roster update is all you'd need - possibly with a new disc version released every 3 or 4 years.

As for Rock Band/Guitar Hero - I think they're much closer to having a perfect foundation. In fact, I would go so far as to say that with a simple downloadable expansion rather than a completely new disc, Rock Band could be a complete game. As it's been said, some things it's missing are the online band world tour - one character playing multiple instruments - better downloadable content management (and actually better song management in general). I don't think fixing these things is beyond a software update, though knowing the trend of the industry, we'll more than likely see Rock Band 2.

Maybe you can try to explain it real slow-like for us learning-impaired? What am I missing?

You believe the DLC is too expensive and comes out too frequently to the point that it is not worthwhile for you to buy ALL the songs. There is an ideal option available to you: Don't buy them all. Why would you possibly want them to offer a smaller selection? I don't see a single benefit to you if they only released 3 songs a month. Please help me "comprehend" your problem with the weekly DLC that I enjoy.

OK, if you're only objection is to the price, then that's an understandable point. That's just not how I interpret your posts, especially the first one:

the way rockband dlc is going, I prefer a whole new game. but if it wasnt as bad as 3 new songs EVERY single week @ 2 bucks a pop, I would prefer DLC.

Is that not complaining about the FREQUENCY that the DLC comes out, as evidenced by your emphasis on "EVERY"? That's where our disconnect is, so I'm sorry that I misunderstood your subsequent posts. I don't see any reason to complain about the frequency of the DLC, which is why I was so adamant.
