question for metallica fans

how did the two different versions of "whiskey in the jar" come about? i'm curious about the inspiration for the origional song and why the lyrics were changed.

Right, there is the original by Thin Lizzy and then there is the Metallica cover. Which, by the way, I think I favor more than the original. I am not aware of any change in lyrics, but it is possible.

Whiskey in the Jar is an old drinking song, I don't know why they credit Thin Lizzy other than the fact that they may have been the first to put a rock spin on it.

Metallica only recorded 1 version of that song, but there are MANY variations of the "real" lyrics to the song. It's an old Irish folk song, so after being recorded 18,000 times, different people have put a different spin on it.

But the Metallica version's lyrics are in your second link (Cork & Kerry mountains, girl's name is Molly, etc...)
