Question for HS and MS teenagers who are computer savvy...(not computer related question)

Being an intelligent teenager who is motivated to be successful in life, would you be interested in volunteering your expertise as someone who is familiar with computers? Some possible benefits being an extracurricular to put on college apps, perhaps extra credit in a tech/school class, resume builder, very small compensation/rewards, flexable and short hours, and free food. This isn't me asking for help per se, just trying to guage the level of enthusiasm that one might have if they were a teenager.

Just curious as to how this idea sounds to some 12-18 years of age, as I may be trying to wrangle in some young local volunteers for a charity project over the next year if I see that its something that is even remotely of interest to teenagers these days.

Thanx,
Brackis

Yes, if I had the time. Details on the project would help me give an exact opinion/answer.

Spending some spare time (a handful of times a month) fixing computers and installing basic software on computers.

Yes, I did exactly that while in highschool and it got me nominated for some award, got put on my college apps, and (i only discovered recently) got me a generic letter from then-President Clinton.

This is fabulous news, thank you for your reply. I now have some faith in our youth and in my project working :)

I already do that for my family for free, and you're offering food and some compensation? Hell yes. Where do you live?

Yes, in fact, I do it on a daily basis. HOWEVER, do NOT allow yourself to get roped into heading up a software development team for free. Biggest mistake I've ever made (and my discontent shows in my code. It's rather vulgar :p )

you'll probably find that most people on here already do computer work for free, or have done it for free before, thus the fact that you're offering anything at all is a big plus

Need more details. Is this a local thing, or an over-the-internet assistance idea?

Edit: Just read more. Where in MA are you located? Give me a ride to where it is that you're doing this and I'm in.

If it's over the Internet and I can work on MY time. Then sure, I'll be more than happy to help.

would have been 4 years ago- the only reason id work for free is if i could tack it onto my college apps. youll be lucky to get anyone older than 15 for that reason.

If this is an over-the-internet deal, let me know. I'd definitely be in. Regardless of the perks, seeing as free food doesn't really seem free if you have to send it across the country.

I'm thrilled to see that people actually go out of their way and are enthused about such a project. What I am trying to organize involves actual hands on work with computers, but the offers of assistance are flattering.

Yeah, I'd like to help. If I could know a bit more about it, it'd be much better.

Is this centered around one geographic region? How much knowledge is required, exactly?

Thanks

(17, btw. HS senior)

I've done that kind of thing through high school, though I'm not sure if it helped on the college apps any because I didn't get any special official recognition for it, though I was able to get in where I wanted to go anyway, so it's not like it mattered. :)

Anyway, as I'm graduating from HS this spring, I may be a bit old for your project, but good luck anyway.

Thank you for your interest but i'm still a ways off, from a logistical and legal standpoint, to be able to bring aboard people. You sound like just the kind of person i'd want to work with though

Pretty simple actually, plan would be to try and recuit a few people to go to an office a couple of days a month for an afternoon and just hang out eating food and drinking soda while getting computers running and installed with some software. Comps will then be distributed and installed where needed (depending on what organizations I can work with)
