I just got a copper HedgeHog cooler and I wanted to know whether I should direct the airflow of the fan towards or away from the heatsink. I seem to remember most Alpha's blew the air over the heatsink but the person I bought it from said to point the fan away. Any thoughts on this?
I guess I can try both and see for myself but it's not the type of heatsink you want to be taking off and removing several times (it's quite heavy and also soft ...prone to damage)

ps - I have a Lian-Li PC60 case and I am running a Duron 600 at 1050 (7x150) at 1.87v now with a SuperOrb cooler but it locks up once in a while in stress tests now that the weather is warming up here ...like for example after looping Unreal castle flyby for like 30 minutes + ...it kicks me back to desktop (with the SuperOrb I mean, haven't tried Hedgehog yet)
 
Pointing the fan AWAY from the HS will provide the best cooling. This design is most efficient with a fan "sucking" air across it, rather than "blowing" air down onto it.
 
well that's kinda what I thought but I was thinking since copper doesn't release heat to the air as easily as aluminum that more air blowing across the fins would be better ...thanks for the reply
 
The fan sucking air accross the heatsink is the best. So I would have the fan blowing away from the heatsink.

You think that the air flowing through a fan is unbalanced? CFMs in, CFMs out. I don't understand your reasoning.
 
well I didn't take any thermodynamics classes in college but it makes sense to me that to cool down copper air flushing over it would be better than pulling air away.
I am making these assumptions specifically because it is copper and not aluminum.
Hmmm, I think I am going to give it one shot each way b/c I already assembled it with airflow going towards the sink. I will posts result, my cpu temp monitor is pretty good. I guess actually I can just flip the fan once the sink is in place anyways.
 
To get performance out of any heatsink with the fan sucking you will have to do what Alpha does with the PEP and the PAL and thats to put a shroud so it draws air from towards the base of the heatsink and not from the very top. Aluminum foil works for the test.
