Question for HD DVD owners

I've greatly increased my HD DVD purchases lately. I'm not buying any more blu-rays until there is absolutely no other alternative whatsoever. Just don't like bluray, and I'm taking my HDDVD to the grave with me!

This doesn't make any sense to me. If you can play either, why would you hate Blu-ray?

Because the bluray movies I've purchased thus far seem grainy and far from high def; whereas all my HD movies are phenomenal. I don't know if I just keep picking poorly-encoded bluray films while picking the best of the HD films or what, but it's left a sour taste in my mouth for BR. Also, I HATE the stupid baby blue cases. I hate looking at them sitting on my shelf. Stupid reason, I know... but yeah. HDDVD made a better initial impression, and my HD movies are so much sharper.

FWIW... my HD player is a TOshiba HD-A2, and for BR I'm using a PS3. Both run through a Pioneer Elite receiver via HDMI, going to a Westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD. So with these components, there's no reason BR movies shouldn't look like high def... and yet, they don't. The only one I have that looks HD isn't even a movie at all... it's "Cars". Otherwise, I have 300, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, March of the Penguins, and some others. they ALL look very, very grainy. "Cars" is the only one that looks incredible.

My HDDVD experience has had precisely zero let-downs or disappointments, hence they have earned my loyalty.

I haven't jumped on any HD format yet. I didn't get a VCR until the Betamax vs VHS debate shook out either. I'm of the philosphy you takes your chances when you want to be an early player in the new technolgy market.

I don't even have an HDTV yet, but plan on getting one this spring or summer. Then I'll consider and HD disc player which sounds like the only real choice will be the standard - ie blueray.

There must be something wrong with this picture, because if the only HD disc standard out there going forward give grainy movie pictures - then that makes no sense! The few that I've seen demonstrated at best buy looked completely amazing. It was like looking through a window a reality, not a video or movie.

I'm with you on Cars, but I strongly disagree with you on Pirates 2. All 3 of those movies are simply stunning, and don't look grainy at all. 300 isn't as good, but I think that's by design. I have no interest in Penguins, so I'll have to give you that one.

There has been quite a few stinkers, mostly because they were done in MPEG 2. Some were just bad transfers though. Checkout this thread if you want an idea of whats good or bad.

Hmm, very interesting thread. I'll study that a little more when I have some time. But seriously, my Pirates/Caribbean movie is terrible! It looks no better than a standard DVD, except in about five scenes. Maybe that's just a bad copy. But it looks like pure crap.

I do know lots of people are having equivalent results with BR and HD, I just wish I was one of them 🙁 But anyway, there's still PLENTY of great HD movies I'm going to jump on before I try my hand at BR again. By that time, perhaps my luck will be better.

There has been quite a few BRD stinkers compared to HDDVD. Notably the early releases. Also, a whole bunch of them didn't bother to remaster (on both camps) so what is the point?
