How much ARE guns? Everytime i post that in a gun thread, no one answers. How much are they (handguns, shotgun, rifles, etc)? Is ammo expensive? What licenses and stuff do you need? How much do these cost? I seriously doubt i would ever own one, but i've always been curious.

thanks

Cost is very variable. I'll try to give you my experience in the "mainstream" range but obviously there are cheaper and more (sometimes much more) expensive versions.

Handguns: 400-600
pump shotguns: 300-600
semi-auto shotgun: 500-900
overunder shotgun: 8000-1300
smaller rifle (22 and 17): 200-350
larger rifles (like 223 and 308): 400-700

Regarding ammo, a 50 box of 9mm will be like what, 13 bucks now. $40s&w will be like 16, $45acp like $20? 50 .22lr will be like $1.50-2.00. 20 rounds of 308 will be like $15-20 bucks.

Licenses and stuff you need depends on where you live.

Different guns have different prices.

After taxes, I paid between 700 and 800 for my Smith and Wesson 686+

Ammo prices have gone up recently due to brass prices ... Currently at the ranges I go to, it's around $15 to $20 per box of 50 bullets for practice grade 38spl, and about $20-$25 for practice grade 357 mag.

I'm hoping they come down a bit since metal prices look to be dropping due to the wonderful state of the economy ...

EDIT: I live in IL, my foid was like $25 I think, but I don't quite remember.

My next gun is going to be a 22 because ammo is cheaper.

Also, it costs about $15-$20 per hour of range time at the ranges I go to... And targets are usually about a quarter a piece.

At one place I go to, eye and ear protection is included in the range fee if you don't have your own. At another place, they charge like $1 or something or take a deposit ....

Supply is going up but demand is also going up. Gun sales have gone up a lot.

Demand of Copper as a whole is going down though, since there is MUCH less home construction, etc ... and China's not buying up as much ...

Yes there will be more bullets in demand, and more guns in demand, but, they are a very small percentage of the total copper market. (bronze is copper and zinc, at the peak, copper was over $4 per pound and zinc was over $1. Currently, zinc is around 60 cents and copper is around $1.60. Since the cost of the raw materials came back down to realistic levels, ammo prices should drop too ....

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but can't a 357 fire 38spl practice rounds?

You might not get the answers you want because its a very vague question. What do you want to do with the gun? Conceal carry, hunt, sporting, self defense, home defense, security type job, etc etc etc. Most states have a residential conceal carry permit but any gun can be bought after a 3-5 day waiting period. It just has to stay in your house or locked away somewhere inaccessible.

Again, vague question. You can buy a cheapo one for 300 or you can buy an authentic/high quality one for $2000. Its like saying do you want a Ford Taurus or an F350. A Hyundai Accent or BMW 3 series.

Fixed that for you.

You don't need a license to buy a handgun here. You just need to pass a very basic proficiency test and an even more basic common sense written test.

Yep, knowing what kind of gun(s) you are looking at would allow for more precise answers. Also, knowing what state you reside in is important in determining what licenses, etc. may be required.

Yes, a .357 also chambers .38 special, but not the other way around. For a self-defense gun you want to spend most of your practice time firing the same round that would be used in a pressure situation. If you fire all .38 special through a mag and then suddenly have to shoot a real magnum round when it's do or die you won't be prepared.

$300 is made mostly of plastic. $2000 is high quality. They both fire...at least a few rounds. ;)

When people fix things, bold or italicise what you change. Took me forever to see the handgun and overunder shotgun changes. On handguns, you're probably right. A glock/xd for like 500 up to an hk ups or p2000 or a sig 226 or 229 for 700-800. Yea, I added an extra 0 in the overunder beginning price.

Regarding license, in cali there is a test to pass as well, but it still gets you a "license." OR at least a handgun safety certificate. I didn't want to talk about places I may not know too much about.

BurnItDwn: I hope you're right. I woudln't mind prices going down. Only have like 6k rounds of 9mm, 1k of 12ga and 20k of 22 left.

It totally varies.

For instance:

In Washington
CPL - $65
Taurus Millenium Pro PT140 (v.3) - $300
Box of 180gr Hydra-shocks - $20

Just like anything else, there are cheap, "get them out the door" deals, and on the other side there are the hand pieced, tuned ones.

The car analogy is pretty close. But then asking about how much an AK47 costs is like asking how much a red car costs :p

If you just want something that goes bang, you could get something in every category under $400 each easily.
