Question for Golfers

I just started golfing again( I haven't golfed for 5+ years and even then I hardly ever went.) So the past couple of days I've been hitting alot of balls in the back yard(at least 2 hours a day). And last night I played 9 holes.

When I woke up today I noticed that my left thumb was sore. Like if i were to grip the rail on a stairway I can feel it. On the inside of my left thumb(facing my other fingers). I'm right handed BTW.

So I'm wondering if this is something normal, like I just haven't golfed much before so I am just using muscles that I don't normally use that way. Or is it something I'm doing wrong with the club/grip that's causing the pain. Also should I just let it rest for a few days, or just keep at it?

I always have some aches and pains if I play after a long layoff. I usually just pop some alleve or advil and not worry about it.

Aches and pains in the joints, especially the shoulders and elbows, would be normal if you're hitting that many balls. Pain in the left thumb isn't normal. If that's hurting more than other parts of the body it's probably a grip problem.

well... how were you shooting? i know most grips, including mine, involve the right hand overlapping the left thumb. if you were going to the right most of the time you may have been gripping too hard with your right hand, causing it to go right by opening the face/making your left thumb sore. just a thought.

* This is assuming youre right handed, if not ignore this.

I felt all sorts of weird muscle pain after i went to the driving range for the first time. But no finger pain

That could be it. I do grip like that, and I do slice alot. What should be my remedy?

Well (and i preface this by telling you im not good), when i was taught one thing that was emphasized was that about 90% of your grip should come from your left hand, with the right mostly being along for the ride. try your swing (i mean in your yard or something, not on the course) with just the left hand holding the club so you can get the feel of what im talking about. after you get the idea, next time you notice yourself doing the slice thing while playing try thinking about it (90% left grip) before you swing for a second (its easy to forget technique from frustration/drinking/smoking).

Also, since it sounds like you may be gripping too hard to hit it harder. remember, the power comes from the hips and your shift of weight, not the arms/wrist. try slowing your swing down to about 1/5 its usual speed and think smoothness instead of power.

Its most likely that your grip is too strong on your right hand, pushing in your left thumb and causing problems, that or your grip is too weak and your thumb is moving on club causing an early stage blister

Well it's not a blister. It's sore, like muscle sore. Not skin sore.

Agree that you're probably gripping to0 tight with your right hand. Also most times a slice is a grip problem (right hand too open, or a weak grip). Lessons are invaluable.

Google "weak golf grip"

Ok so I went out and picked up a club and swung it a few times. Turns out my wrist/hand is sore also. No so much my thumb. So I don't really know what's going on. It most;y hurts on the back swing.

When you back swing, I bend my wrist alot. Is that a proper back swing or are your wrist supposed to be more straight?

Details please. Did someone beat you with a golf club or something?

90 degrees is fine, keep left arm straight, are you hitting the ball "fat" a lot - hitting the ground before the ball. The jar could cause some pain. But honestly if you hit a lot of balls and aren't used to it you'll be sore until your muscles adapt.

But if you really just started out do yourself a HUGE favor and get some lessons.

Well the reason I'm concerned is because I have tendonitis in my right wrist from computer use. The golfing doesn't bother it though.

But my concern is I don't want to do permanent damage to my left wrist from golfing. I would like to have one good wrist.

I'm really enjoying golfing, but not enough to do permanent damage to my wrist/hand because of it.

It's not supposed to bend that much. In fact throughout your backswing, it should be relaxed but firm in position if you know what I mean - the more you cock your wrist, the less consistent your swing becomes. Notice that most top pro players at the top of their swing, the wrist is just <90*

I got a hairline fracture in my left leg when a drive ball struck me directly at close range.

Anyone else have any input?

It's still sore today +3 days later. I don't know if thats normal or not. I know you're not doctors, but as I said before I have tendonitis in my right wrist, and I have been to the dr many times for it and they were no help(even at diagnosing it). So I'm just kinda looking for some personal experiences and knowledge here for now.

Heh, my brother got hit similar to that on his shin. It swelled up for 2 days or so, then the whole area just died, and he had a hole in his leg. Not pretty.

OP let pain subside, then go to range and don't hit 200 drivers, just relaxed 7-W shots with an even grip and see what happens.

"You're friend" might be a little worried too if he already had tendonitis in one hand.
