Yes i know it's in reference to coach marty shottenheimer's offense, but wtf is it? It seems like it's used as a derogatory term. Is it some style of offense or something? I've heard this term used a lot.

Marty Ball was developed by Schottenheimer...

The basics to it are to establish the run early, use the pass only to set up the run, and puts a lot of emphasis on field position...

Overly conservative style of play. Probably why he'll never win the big games. He doesn't play to win, he plays not to lose.

ah ok, that's not a bad idea for certain teams (like the steelers).

WINNAR!! :)

My friend Jason, who is a HUGE Browns fan, once said of Schottenheimer, "he is the champion of mediocrity."

lol...yup. Martyball is to hand off to Tomlinson 30+ times a game. Throw to him out of the backfield another 10 times. And fill in the rest of the time with 5-10 yard passes. Off course I'm being a little sarcastic, but they are right. It is a conservative style of play calling relying mainly on the run with a few dink and dunk passes, with MAYBE 1 or 2 shots downfield if he's feeling spry.
