Question for Firefly fans.

Did we ever find out what the backstory on Rev. Book was? He apparently was important since the Alliance agreed to medically treat him once they saw his id card. Plus he had a lot of knowledge of weapons and tactics.

Was this ever explained in the show, the movie or by Joss Whedon?

I always figured he was an operative or something, but apparently there's a comic book called Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale that explains his backstory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrial_Book#Character_biography

If I remember correctly, pretty much each character would have a secret that you would eventually find out. I think they talked about Inara's during the 10-year reunion, and it is that

I figured Book was doing similar things that The Operative in Serenity was doing. A soldier who never stopped to asked questions, and then turned to God when he started asking them. I think The Operative would have eventually took Book's place if the movies continued. Eventually I'll get around to reading the comic, but I'm saving that experience for a rainy day.
