Question for DirecTV Tivo users?

I have it connected. I know you definitely need it to activate the unit but I doubt it matters after that. I never had one hooked up to the receiver I used before I got the TIVO.

Nope. It is only for pay-per-view like LikeLinus said. Hooking up a phone line also prevents the nag screen. Of course, you can call DirecTV and tell them that you aren't hooking your DirecTivo up to a phone line as well.

Alright sounds good.

One more question
Is there any type of special installation required to switch my regular satellite box to a Tivo box?

I guess only if i want a Tivo box with options to watch one show and record another.

No special installation unless you want dual tuners and don't already have the lines put in for that. Sounds like you want dual tuners so the question is whether you already have two wires from separate LNBs coming into the room where you want a tivo.

You need to have the phone line on to activate service updates, one of which is coming quite soon which will implement folders and faster menus. If you don't have the phone line attached I don't believe it will ever activate the new version, even though it will have downloaded it.

Yes I want dual tuner option but I?m not sure what type of upgrade would be needed.
I have one dish with a three LNB setup and I have three satellite boxes in three separate rooms. ( This was upgraded last year when i added another satellite box by DirecTV)

About the phone line i only ask because i have VOIP only and I know it has an option for fax services and cable boxes and satellite boxes but its disable at the moment. If I turn it on it states it will preserve 120kb of bandwidth for that.

You may get nag screens telling you to hook up the phone but they can be turned off. Are you talking about a stand alone tivo with a D* rcvr? Or a dtivo dvr? Dtivo dvrs are the way to go with the dual tuners.

You'll need the oval dish with three LNB which is what it sounds like you have. You'll have to have two cable lines going from the dish to the room where you want the DirecTivo installed. The installer should take care of all of that though. You should be fine with that as well since the three LNB oval dish has four jacks you can plug into. You'll need extra equipment though if you ever want to add more receivers.

Just make sure they do a good job and discuss with them where you want your cable run. I had tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum try to run the cable on the frontside of my siding. I made them tuck it behind the bottom of the siding.

DirectTV DVR with Tivo, thats what want. I'm getting tired of the VCR and remembering to program it or have enough tape for items.

I guess Dual Tuners is not that big of a deal but it would be great.

I had fairly good people, old guys not young guys. I guessing putting the extra line where the original line is located would be good.

Its funny last time the installer came and put the extra line in my room he started to drill on the side of the window and hit a snag, he could not get through because there some type of metal frame around the window that he never seen before. So he had to drill another hole about 4 inches below the original one.
