Question for DirecTivo owners

I'm getting ready to upgrade my wife's DirecTivo and was wondering if I could take the existing HDD out and hook it up to my PC and copy video directly off. She has some stuff on there that we want to keep and that just sounds so much easier than any other options.

Thanks.

No, unfortunately you can't. Don't do it, your machine will screw up the formatting on the drive. Your best option would be to enable networking and grab the shows using something like TyTools. You can find more info on Tivo hacking here.

Dave answered it, but i laughed at your sig.

What do you mean by upgrade? Are you replacing the unit with something else, or upgrading the recording capacity?

Your wife has her own TiVo?

I'm going to add upgrade the recording capacity and also add networking features to it.

Yeah, we have two DirecTivo units. One for the living room TV and one for the bedroom TV. Since she watches most of her TV up in the bedroom, we just call that one hers.

hack your DirecTV TiVo's... that way you can connect both of them together and transfer the shows back and forth. You can also then take and extract the shows you record off of the TiVo as well using tytool...

I wont lie, it's somewhat difficult to find all the right files and instructions, but it is so worth it!

You can copy the exixting programs over during your upgrade. Sure the upgrade will take longer, but it's worth it.
