If I use a 56kpbs modem, the max i can get is 56kbps..

what if I use a direct dial up connection? Meaning use telephone to connect to one location... one on one.... not from the internet.... how fast would it be?

It would not improve your connection, infact due to FCC regulations you can only get 53kps... over phone lines

Exactly what Arcane said. 53K is max in US. And that is ideal line conditions for download only. Uploads still go analog at a optimal max of 33.6K IIRC.

kelvin1704,

if you connect "one-on-one" with analog modems, you'll get max. 33kbps (that's the analog-to-analog limit I believe)...

...btw thats the max. speed for my own dial-in server (for lan/internet access when away from home); the speeds are between 30.66kbps-33kbps

No that is the Max that telephone lines (anologue) can do unless you have 2 strapped (bonded) together then it'll go 53KX2=106K (download) and 33k (upload)or you can ISDN it (64K)...56K means up to that speed but it's limited to 53K
