Question for contractors (advertising)

I own a construction company and am looking for effective methods of advertising. I've experimented with several already, including flyers and newspaper ads, and am looking for additional feedback on these and other methods of advertising from other people who are in this or similar businesses. Basically, what i'm trying to do here is determine which method yields the best results.

My neighbor is a plumber. He told me the best way he's found to get business is to put his business cards all over. For example, there is a contractor's board at Lowe's, a community board at the supermarket etc. At the counter of the local plumbing shop, he has to restock his cards weekly. Just a suggestion, YMMV.

I've always found that more contracts come your way if you get to know people in the city board and chamber of commerce. they hook you up faster than flyers.

also, for small jobs - repair, finish carpentry, etc. - try to get with the local realtors who specialize in either revitalizing inner city communities (fixing up brownstones for wealthier middle class), or those companies that create new urban developments. depends on what you want and how much can you do.

Yeah, i have about 3K cards in circulation right now, and i think i need more. I'll try to find more places to leave them at.

Yeah, i'm actually trying to find some companies that would be interested in working with us right now. My company specializes in stucco, BTW.
