Question for Connecticut peeps! My GF is going to be working in Stamford... where should we move?

So my GF got a job offer in Stamford. I think i'm going to be looking in Stamford or Norwalk for a new job myself as well. I was looking at Stamford and OMG the apartments there are expensive.

I noticed that there's a commuter train though

If we decide to take the train to stamford, we'd like to keep our commute to 30 - 40 minutes max. What's a good town on this map to live in? I'd like to keep our monthly rent to $1500 maximum, but i prefer $1200 if possible (1 or 2 bedroom apt, depending on the difference in cost)

Reasonably priced rentals near the Western Connecticut coast? Ugh... That's tough. Besides Bridgeport (where you probably don't want to live), I can't think of much.

Would New Haven be too far away?

Stamford is EXPENSIVE, I doubt that you will find a 2br apt in an area that you feel safe for under $2000/month...

Maybe Stratford or Milford. Still easily make your commute time on the train. Anything to the west of Bridgeport, from Fairfield all the way to Greenwich you'll be facing the same pricing as Stamford if not worse.

South Norwalk is pretty nice. they try to be hip and call it SoNo now. there are some nice restaurants and there are lots of condos

Greenwich/North Stamford and New Canaan will cost you a fortune (unless of course you sold your company for 10 million dollars, by all means, buy a mansion next to 50cent!)

Also, why would you and the gf want to move to CT just because of her job, are you sure you will like the area / can afford the area / satisfied with their nightlife, etc? Don't get me wrong I love CT myself, and you may already have thought this through, but how about compromising for somewhere in the middle (like Westchester County NY... Scarsdale, White Plains, North White Plains, Rye, Mamaroneck, etc) so you can still go to NYC while she has a 20 minute drive to stamford?

I live in Queens and I drive to Norwalk frequently (as in 2,3 times a week) there for a client of mine. the drive is not short, but not unbearable.

Welcome to Fairfield County! I love it here but its not for everyone. I would recommend considering South Norwalk. My father just sold a rental property he had there. Depending on your age, the night life is OK in SoNo. Prices and cost of living are high but not as bad as NYC. If you need any help, please feel free to PM me. My father deals with both residential and commercial real estate. He may be able to help you find a rental.

EKKC -- FYI, 50 does not live in Fairfield County. He actually lives quite a distance away.

I used to have an uncle who lived in Hamden and commuted to Stamford, and I believe he used to pay below $1500 for a 2 bedroom apt (Aspen Glen Apartments or something....nice neighborhood and good buildings)

New Haven has great nightlife as well... it just depends on which direction he wants to go.

The problem is connecticut is one of those places that you have to drive everywhere, so you might consider living 1/2 hour to 45 minute drive away. I live 45 minutes from work so its not unbearable but im also 2 minutes from school so it has its advantages.
