I have an onkyo receiver hooked up via digital coax cable to my comcast digital cable box. For the past few weeks I cannot get my receiver to stay on 5-Channel mode. It always defaults to Pro Logic. I cannot think of anything else except Comcast has changed something on their end. No one has messed with any of the settings on the receiver. Anyone know what could be going on?

BTW you would think that Pro Logic would sound better but for some reason it doesn't. Much quieter and the back speakers do not have sound. A couple of times I managed to put it on 5-Channel and it sounded much better. But within minutes it owuld just change back to Pro-Logic.

My HD DVR Comcast box is hooked up to my receiver via optical and my audio mode will switch automatically depending on what the channel is outputting.

If its Dolby digital then it will switch to that if its stereo then that, though I've never had it switch to Pro Logic that I can recall.

Why would Pro Logic sound better? It's antiquated technology.

Anyway, check your cable box & make sure it's set to output correctly.

Do you have anything else with a digital coax connection that can output 5.1? Try testing your receiver with a DVD player, see if it works correctly with that.

Are you SURE your receiver is set correctly?

Also your cable box can only output what is being provided to it.

I was having the same issue a few months ago...(right after they rolled out on the On Demand service in my area) ...

Assuming that you have On Demand, try hitting the ON Demand Button on your remote (which should change your box to channel 1). Then hit the last button to return to the previous channel. Every time I would do this, I would get my Dolby Digital 5.1 signal back on my receiver...

Comcast did something to fix this as I no longer have to do this anymore...

good luck...

Not sure if I have On Demand??????

I forgot to add, I have had this reciever for ~3 years. Had it hooked up to a Comcast digital cable box at another house for a year or two and at my current house for 1.5 yrs. It has always sadi 5-Channel Stereo when watching tv. No one has touched the cabling/settings/etc. I would think there would be a way to force it to use 5-channel stereo.
About twice in the last few eeks I have managed to find a program/channle that let me set it in 5-cahnnel audio mode but when I switched the sation it always goes back to Pro Logic. Then the only option I have is Por Logic and stereo. Stereo actually sounds better but , of course, it doesn't use my rear speakers nor my sub.
I was thinking of just getting another reciver but I do not want to fork out $$$ and have the same problem.

Mine switches back and forth depending on what's on. If it's only broadcast in stereo it uses Pro Logic. If it's broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1, it'll use that.
