Question for coin collectors?

Ok my dad is a coin nut. I want to get him a really nice present for fathers day / Birthday. He has bought a lot of stuff recently off the US mint so i started researching the US Silver Eagle. It seems like the 1994 Edition is worth quite a bit. I am thinking on getting one of these for him. I have been looking on ebay. Here are my questions:

1) I have noticed that some of them are marked with a -p. Does this really matter or no? I think it means they were minted in philly but i don't know if this matters in terms of the value of the coin

2) Is there anything i have to watch out with buying this type of thing off of ebay?

3) Can you recommend any nice coin other than this that would be a nice present and would be between $100-200? I think the 1994 edition of the silver eagle is going for about $200.

Well as you can see i know nothing about this topic but i want to get him something he will enjoy.

Thanks,
Ncage

I don't know much about coins, but I would be VERY careful buying something like that on eBay. Fakes do exist and they can be very hard to spot in person, let alone from a photo in an auction. Certificates of Authenticity can be faked as well.

If you want something like that, try a local coin dealer or a coin show.

He is and im sorry i don't understand what you mean "buy a certified graded coin 65 or above"

yes the "p" means philly, does nothing to coin value. There are some crazy rare 1909 pennys that would be around that price, good if hes got a next to complete american penny set for the 1900's

I will pm an auction link to you. They are professionally graded by a company and in general you will receive a coin in the condition they describe. Some coin grading companies have a better rep. than others.

Grading is subjective a microscopic flaw can change the coin in value. Pros grade these coins, incapsulate them and it is an excellent way to know what you are buying.

True collectors want coins graded 65 or above.

I wouldnt hestitate to buy a certified graded coin from PCGS or NCG.

i'm looking into this stuff these days also, i bought $50 worth of eagles from them last week

one thing that sucks is the price of metals has increased a lot in the past couple years, i was looking in some rag last week and silver eagles were like $8 as recently as 2005

For that coin, the best option is one that is graded MS69 by PCGS. Next would be one graded MS69 by NGC.

What a PCGS MS69 looks like. Actually, that's a bargain price too.
What a NGC MS69 looks like.

I'm not recommending either seller - please do your own due diligence. I'm just giving you links to photos so you know what you're looking for if you go this route. You can buy them just about anywhere but steer clear of coins graded by companies other than PCGS and NGC. There are a lot of different ones out there. Coins graded by PCGS and NGC are generically called "certified" but so are the coins from places which aren't as good. So "certified" by itself is meaningless.

You can also find these ungraded, in the original packaging as they came from the Mint. Those packages look like this. But I would stick to one graded MS69 by either PCGS or NGC. That will assure you you are getting a quality coin.

NGC looks like a steal....think OP would be mad if I bought it? 🙂

oh for reference, MS70 is considered basically perfect and ultra rare. I'm a n00b at this also.

Having collected coins, and receiving coins for gifts I can say its tough to buy for people, if you don't know some of the eccentricities and what your father concentrates on collecting. Even if you did get the silver eagle, who's to say he doesn't already have one. Its sort of like your parents buying you a video card with no prompting or idea about what to get, the thought was there, but it maybe best served if they didn't get anything at all. Bottom line, for ANY hobby, its hard to buy for someone who has a special knowledge, and you don't, unless something is specifically requested.
