I call myself agnostic, but I tend a bit towards the gray area known as weak atheism (which I don't consider to be atheism at all but that's another story). From a neutral standpoint, you have to understand that if there is a God then he doesn't have to justify shit. It's his way or the proverbial highway. In the romanticized christian way of saying things "He created us to love him", which is bullshit-speak for "things are the way they are because He wants them to be that way". If you don't like it then "tough titty" said the kitty, but the milk is supposed to be good after you die.
If there is a God (or many Gods) then he/she/they probably have their own best interests in mind, If that interest includes you then consider yourself lucky. If God exists he's probably not handing out favors for your inconsequential vote of confidence. If God exists then all this terrible suffering you speak of is but a blink in eternity.
I'm in the camp that thinks he most likely doesn't exist, so this question and the mental acrobatics that the devout will go through to answer it are nothing more that wasted energy and time to me.
