Question for car freaks- what is a reasonable price for car detailing?

My car needs a good cleaning inside and out, and I havent the hours or the inclination to do it. What is reasonable, and should I have the dealer, or someone else do it?

Someone else. Look around at Autopia for a detailer in your area. Or maybe you'll learn enough to decide you'll want to set aside a weekend and do it yourself. 😉

I called around and most of the reputable auto detailers (who auto dealers use) charge $150 this is in the Portland, Oregon area.

However I know someone who's a friend of my mechanic and he only charges me $75 to get my car SPARKLING CLEAN inside and out. He does an amazing job. Since my mechanic moved I'm not sure if he still details cars or not.

$75 is perfect for me and worth every penny but I'm too cheap, would never pay more than $100 unless I were selling my car.

If you ever sell a used car, get it detailed professionally it makes a huge difference.

Depends on the level of detailing.

A local place that I occasionally go to for a good wash or wax has about 12 different levels, and 3 levels (car, truck, SUV+) of pricing.

$18 gets you a hand wash, dry, and the carpets vacuumed for a car or compact truck. It takes about half an hour. But (iirc) it costs $275 to get a Subruban fully decked out, including detailing the engine bay, weather stripping, wax, and the whole interior. It takes about 8 hours.

I'd personally take it to an independent shop. $150 will probably get you a cleaning inside and out, upholstry/leather cleaning, engine bay cleaning, and a waxing.

Here are the prices for a place around here that specializes in detailing - link.
Full Detail is $150.
I do all my detailing myself... but ofcourse I spent probably $500+ on supplies... and that doesn't include a nice rubber hose & reel that I'm still yet to buy. Oh and a good extension cord.
I guess it would make sense for a normal person to pay to have it detailed for them. Too bad detail places use wax instead of a polymer like Zaino. Atleast that way you could go 6 months between details instead of 1-2 months. 😉

New place here wants $235 for the full job and $35 for a clean/vacuum/shine.

Personally I'll take a couple hours and do it myself. I don't know about you fellas but I don't make $100/hour!

Get off your fat lazy ass and clean the damn thing yourself, do you let your bike get dirty ?, I think not 😉🙂😀

Some jerk keyed my car in BIG way. There's a huge long scratch (two feet long) on the side, and another one on the hood. How do I get this fixed, and how much will it cost?

That most likely will require an insurance claim and a repaint. Look to spend several hundred dollars for the panels affected, thousands if a complete repaint is required.

About $80.00 - $150.00

Depending on what you need done.
Some places only focus on the outside while others do it all, and good.

i pay $10 😛

heh my dad owns a car dealership. so all i have to do is take it down and have them do it. Buti still have to pay a little.

For a GOOD detailing, about 100 bucks.

Yeah, like other people mentioned... it depends on their definition of a full detailing. FULL is supposed to be EVERYTHING. The rubber trim, the wheel wells, engine bay, trunk, carpet, inside & out... I don't see that in my area... it's always half-a$$ed.

I pay my sister $25 each time I have my car done. She does a good cleaning inside and out, vacuums and removes spots/stains from the carpeting. I usually have her do my car once every 2 months since my 2yr old just LOVES to make messes.

Most of the car wash shops in the area charge $50-150 depending on how much you want done. I would expect to spend $100 for a good looking detail job.

Bastage!

Anyway, I need the interior carpets cleaned especially. The kids and their feet on the back of the seats ARRGGHHH! 😀

I think I am looking at a higher end job. Guess it's time for the Yellow Pages.

Check to see how much your local luxury car dealers charge. They usually use pretty good waxes and do good jobs. I take all of my cars to my local Lexus... they charge $139 for full detail (including all the good stuff like leather conditioning, engine bay cleaning, steam cleaning, etc.) but last time i was there they did a sedan and a Landcruiser for $100 with loaners😀
