Question for California Gun Owners: Moving into state with Assault Rifle

I have a friend whose next duty station is California, and he wants to bring along his personal FAL Rifle (really really nice gun) and his SAR-1. I know California makes this difficult to impossible, and if he can't keep it...well it goes to me for safe keeping and to make sure it doesn't suffer from a lack of regular use 🙂

So my question to you all is, is anyone here familiar with the process (if thier is one) for an out of state resident to move into California and retain thier assault rifles? I am just not familiar enough with California laws to answer this one. Especially interested for exemptions etc. for military members who will not be permament residents.
