Riprorin , you did exactly the same thing I did and about the same time - only I am a few years older than you. I weighed over 170lbs last year and 167 this May when I decided to become FIT.

Basically I engage in at least one hour of high intensity cardio partly with light weights at least one hour a day for 6 days a week (and I like the workouts so much I frequently will double the time) . . . I am (still) 5' 9" tall but now weigh 136lbs. 🙂 And I have more energy than most men half my age (really)

I completely cut out junk food and do no extra supplemental protein (but do eat exceptionally well) . . .

Amazingly, I also kept before and after pics - but they are on digital video and I really hate to look at the old ones (except to note the extreme difference in my body) . . . 😛

Amused, thanks for all of the helpful info. If I do decide to bulk up, I have a good idea how to proceed.

Heh 🙂

I'm 36. Last year my goals were the same as yours: lose weight and get toned. Along the way, I got obsessed with body building and found that I am able to gain muscle mass pretty easily. Plus, I found I LOVE lifting heavy. So I got sidetracked into this body building stuff. 😀

This year I weighed almost as much as I did when I started, but my BF% is much lower, and my LBM is much higher. 🙂

Building mass has never appealed to me - seriously, what are it's advantages other than aesthetics? . . . how healthy is it to be "big" as you age and can no longer lift heavy weights? Since I am 51 the end of this month, I figure fit and lean is good enough for me . . .

and I HATE taking any supplements to add bulk . . .

That's great. I'd love to see your pics!

The watershed for me was when I came back from a week in New Orleans in February. I weighed 185 pounds and was having trouble putting on my socks. Plus, I was tired of feeling lousy. The real breakthrough for me is when I started reading Atkins' books. That really gave me direction on how to shed the weight.

Anyway, I think we're examples that it's never too late to get in shape!

Thanks, but I never intended to share the awful "before" pics. :Q

The results are pretty near identical to yours . . . flab gone and replaced with lean muscle (in fact, a LOT more girls will dance with me now than before - say by a factor of 10x). Heck, even my face looks better which really amazed me - that 'worn out" look is mostly gone (except when I come in at 5 AM like this morning). 😀

My decision to become exta-fit came when my recovery was complete from my 2 whiplash accidents (herniated and bulging neck disks took nearly 7 years of accupuncture to completely "heal"). I am in better shape now than 12 years ago before my accident and when I was regularly surfing BIG Pipeline. 🙂

You're right - IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR HEALTH.

BTW, do you have any suggestions for regularly reoccuring calf leg cramps?

I take lots of extra minerals including Potassium. And use a homeopathic remedy that helps which includes quinine sulphate.

I think I am just pushing my leg muscles harder than they like.

Any problem to continue to exercise with them still sore?
(besides pain)

The reason I'm taking whey protein is to avoid losing muscle mass, not to increase muscle mass.

Do you think my use of protein is doing this?

I am not certain . . . I always thought we get plenty of protein from the average meal - not sure about Atkins' Diet. I thought - UNLESS you are wanting to add bulk - it is more-or-less useless to take any extra (just to avoid "losing" muscle) unless your workouts are extreme. Please correct me if I misunderstood.

And any suggestions about leg cramps?

edit: I gotta "go" for a couple of hours to work/play in the sun - it's a GORGEOUS day; I'll check back.

Anyway, congratulations on your "new" body. 🙂
