You don't have to start as a Rep 1, you could apply as a Rep2. The pay rate is about maybe a dollar or two. They get paid more because they have to deal with more crap. Do you work there? If you do, you could make like 50 or 100 bucks (varies), for referring him.

I am also interested in working at Best Buy. I plan on applying this summer. Currently I attend Texas A&M. Can you explain the differences between a Rep 1 and a Rep 2? Also, what qualifications are needed to work as a Tech? I suppose A+, others? Just our of curiosity, what kind of discount do employees get? ;) Always an incentive for people like me at a tech store. Thanks!

Rep 1's are cashiers that you see at the check out lanes. Rep 2's are customer service reps. I'm not sure if you actually have to have any qualifications to be a tech, you have to know how to install memory and basic peripherals (HD's). I am in no way insulting your postion JMCorey, that's probably the best position at bestbuy other than inventory (sit back and do nothing). I had a friend who was a rep 1, and he asked to switch to the tech bench, and they let him...and he had no qualifications except for the fact that he knew how to install hardware.

don't quote me on this, but on the east coast...I got hired (having no cashier experience) at a 6.30/hr rate. I think Rep 2's start somewhere around $7.

edit:
what kind of discount do employees get?
5% over cost...example: bbuy pays $100 for a tv, you get it for 105.

heh...yeah....I hate best buy (just thought I would add that in). I mean, I like the store (ie. Visiontek Geforce3 Ti200 99 bucks), but I hate the way they run the store.

BBs are finally manning the check out lanes? It's about time.

They also have this thing called 'code 1' which is used at least twice an hour at my store. It means all available employees have to come up and ring up customers when the lines get long. So at least they do something about it.

I'd have to see that in action. Of course that would mean actually going into a BB, something I try not to do.
