Question for barbeque experts

I'm going to Tennesee (Memphis and Nashville) late this week and I know there will be a lot of barbeque joints.

Does all barbeque sauce have sugar in it?

I hope not, because I don't eat sugar.

Pretty much all BBQ sauce has sugar in it. The spicy variety may have less, and the sweet kind obviously has more. I'm not sure about southern sauces, (KC is the ONLY place for BBQ imo), but i'd use it sparingly. If you just have sauce on the food itself, and not dipping your ribs/meat in extra sauce, you should be fine. My weakness in BBQ joints is the fries and red creme soda!

Actually, it is possible to make barbecue sauce with tomato juice, mustard, and worchesire (sp?) sauce (and a few other ingredents). But unless you make it yourself, it's not easy to tell. And you kind of have to define "sugar" since there are many types. Glucose is a sugar that's one of the key outputs from photosynthesis.

Clarification: I try to avoid refined sugar.

Forget it. You arent going to find anything. Any sauce I can think of has a sweetener of some kind. That means sugar.

Whats wrong with sugar?

The only good BBQ is Texas BBQ, not as much sugar as others but its still got some. I dont think you can make BBQ (at least properly), w/o some brown sugar.

I don't know of much if any sugar in the vinegar based sauces.

That flavored ketchup you yanks call barbeque sauce just ain't right. Its a down right atrocity.

That's why it's best to make your own!

He may be, but if that is his reasoning, it is flawed. It isn't about sugars, but carbohydrates. If he were diabetic, then we would exchange the small amount of sugar for another small amount of another carb.

He's all about that Atkins Diet even though he hasn't an ounce of fat on him. I think he is being a little neurotic myself.

For the record: North Carolina-style BBQ sauce really doesn't have any sugar in it. It's mostly vinegar.

And now you know where I was born. 🙂
Hehe....I was in Burlington all of last week. Rest assured I loaded up on BBQ while I was there. 😀

Brown sugar unless specified is refined. Molasses is extracted and then added to it. Why? I don't have a clue. Honey based or a white sauce would be an alternative. Would be helpful to know the reason for not wanting sugar in it.

Dammit now I'm craving some good BBQ.

Do you know how hard it is to find really good BBQ in Los Angeles without driving through the ghetto?
