question for audiophiles

I want to get one of those uits that is an amp/reciever/ dvd player all in one unit, becauase I have limited space. What is something like that called? It has "virtual 5.1" sound because there's only two speakers and a subwoofer, which is built into the unit.

What would something like that be called, so I can research the various brands?

How much are you looking to spend?

Also, PM YOyoYOhowsDAjello, he doesn't have the custom title "Soundman" for no reason 😉

1. how much do you want to spend
2. what kind of source material will be used? (movies %? games%? music %?)
3. the audiophiles will get pissed that you called them out of their holes i nthe title for somethign that will probably cost less than $24,000

I'm looking to spend as little as possible. I don't even know what they go for though, I remember reading about them in a magazine though

Primarily for movies (20%) and TV (80%)

I really just need a search term for google

What is something like that called?

$5?
Yeah, give us some numbers to work with. Some won't look at speakers below $10k each and some won't spend more than $100 for the entire setup...

Then why ask the audiophiles?

Edit: Missed the $2000 limit. Carry on.

My two cents:

B&W 300 series speakers
Yamaha RX-V657
Stands/brackets/cables...

I'm confused. You're wanting something with the receiver, dvd player, stereo speakers, and subwoofer all in one unit?

I think so. Is there anything out there like that? I vaguely recall seeing an article in a magazine calle ce that talked about HT setups, and one option was this little box that had the sub, 2 satellites, the reciever, amp, and what I thought was the dvd player, all in one little unit? Maybe the dvd player wasn't included. Not sure. I'm looking to save as much space as possible.

While we're sort of on the topic, is there a poor man's audio forum?

For instance, there's TimeZone and then there's PMWF (Poor man's watch forum). It would be nice to get an idea as what the good 'bang for the bucks' are...

Ever thought about wall mounting small speakers?

I'm no audiophile... although this thread appears to have nothing to do with audiophile topics 😛

You don't want that.

How limited a space are we talking about?

Would something like a mini DVD player and a receiver fit in your situation?

You could get a nice 2.1 system going for under $2000 but the better ones are not going to be small.

A sub built into a receiver/player/amp unit is not going to work very well.

You couldn't shove a sub into a corner of the room or somthing?

Would bookshelf speakers be too big for you?
